Volvo Penta Outdrive Paint

After 4 years of use, our volvo DP outdrive is starting to look a little worn with scratches and chipped paint. I purchased a can of what was supposed to be the matching high gloss gun metal looking color but when I sprayed it on it turned out to be basically primer and the outdrive looks worse then when it was just scratched and chipped. So I'm back to square 1 trying to figure out the right color to match.

Anybody have any experience with touching up the volvo outdrive and making it turn out close to new looking?

Re: Volvo Penta Outdrive Paint

Just done mine, looks new now. I used proper VP etch primer and VP paint. All ok, no paint loss. 99% of problems result from insufficient prep and contaminated surfaces. Take your time and get all the loose paint off before degreasing (preferably MEK or other suitable etching substance) then reprime all the areas you plan on painting. Let it go very hard before you topcoat. Don't try and build the coats too quickly, and keep the coats thin. Better to build up thin quick drying coats than put thick coats on, trust me I have learned the hard way over the years..!

Just noticed this post I made some time ago. The method I described in the previosu post hs lasted well, no degrading or loss of paint. Its all about the 'prep' !!
