Trailer bunks
 

The bunks on the trailer for my 2001 Shabah 182 need replacing. Has anyone used the plastic one's I have seen instead of the carpeted ones? And if so how do you like them. I know they will be a lot more slippery but that could be good if you're careful. Also if you did switch what did you do about the 2 half Moon bunks by the wheels and the uprights at the back?

I've always been partial to the carpet. We put plastics ones on the jetski trailer and had problems with them wearing into the hulls.

I ordered some Marine carpet on line and will get some pressure treated wood from H/D. The trailer I have is a trail rite and the bunk's are on with carriage bolts. I have seen people on line use lag screws from the bottom instead? It would be easier but wonder if over time there would be a chance of them coming through the wood into the bottom of the boat. One of my current bunk's has collapsed we're it's attached and is only about 1/2 as thick as it should be and also bounces around when the boat isn't on it since you can't tighten it.

Started working on my new bunks the other day and had a question to anyone who has done this before. My old bunks only have carpet on the top and sides everything I have seen on line they completely wrap the wood. In my mind it seems like if you leave the bottom mostly open it would help with letting moisture out instead of locking it in. Or am I missing something? I plan on using SS Staples and no glue also decided on carriage bolts like was originally used.

I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago with PT 2x4's and marine carpet from H/D. I attached them with 1/2" galvanized lag bolts with washers. The whole operation took about an hour (would have taken less time if I had remembered to bring all the proper tools to the boat launch).

Naturally once the old bunks were removed, they were all floppy. So this replacement happened none too soon.

I wrapped the entire 2x4 in the carpet, with the edges meeting at the bottom. My drill had no problem punching pilot holes through the carpet
