Default Do you Unplug Trailer When in Water?

Are you supposed to unplug your trailer lights when you back in the water when loading and unloading the boat?

It depends on who you talk to. Many of today's trailers with LED lights are easily submerged when on and have no issues. The Mariahs of old (on the Heritage trailers) have incandescent bulbs on their trailers. While the tail/turn lights are "submersible" -- that is, they have a clear watertight plastic housing around them inside the red lenses --over time these tend to leak. The accessory/marker lights on the trailers are not necessarily submersible. So, long answer to your short question: yes, I always unplug my lights before I back the trailer in the water. It takes 2 seconds and is a failsafe way to save you from replacing bulbs.

I was wondering about loading at night if they would create a glow to help you load in pitch black dark. My truck has a bed light I could turn on, wasn't sure how well that would help. I thought maybe they'd light up the water enough you could see where to aim.

I always leave mine plugged in. Had the Mariah 11 years now and have only replaced 1 marker light. My trailer is black, and even a little before dark you can't really see it under the water without the lights on. Lights on under the water works great for me.

The one time I loaded in the dark without lights was because someone stole my adapter while I was parked at the ramp. I upgraded to the big round plug and added reverse light to the trailer. No more fooling with the adapter and I can really see the lanes on the ramp as I back down.

I had an elderly guy give me hell about not unplugging one day. He explained it was bad to do. I didnt have much to say back to him.

I launch my boat a lot. A dozen times a month would not be an exaggeration. LED lights and sealed connections. Never had an issue. I have electric brakes too. Guess Ill take my chances. I only live 10 min from the launch ramp.

Reviving old dead threads is always fun....

Put the 202 up on blocks cause I have to do a spindle/axle replacement. Holy cow, that was a chore.

Since I've got her off, I'm kicking around a major maintenance on the trailer. Bunks, lights, winch, etc. Lots out there, any recommendations on LED replacements for markers and tail lights? Really kicking around adding these (Ultimate Trailer Kit - Submersible | Trailer LED Applications) Using the 2 20" wired to backup lights and the others for guidance lights when loading at night (and for fun).

Personally, I've always left mine unplugged, but just because we don't really need them. I'm 4-5 miles from the ramp and the cowboy in me always says I don't need lights unless it's dark out. Night launches are few and far between.... However, since kiddos are getting older - I may try and change that.
