Fuel Gauge or Sender unit
Hi Guys, I have a problem with my fuel gauge or sender unit. The gauge has started to always show full even though I wish it was I know its not.Any suggestions on where to start, should I and how do I remove the sender unit?
Thanks in advance Andy |
Re: Fuel Gauge or Sender unit
I'm not familiar with the new Mariahs but.....i suspect the fuel sender unit is mounted just below the floor in front of the engine. There's likely a little flap that can be opened to access the sender unit & its possible that its simply a corroded or poor connection that is causing the problem.

Re: Fuel Gauge or Sender unit
The fuel gage will show full if the sender wire is somehow shorted to ground. Try disconnecting the sender wire at the back of the fuel gage. If the gage drops to empty when the sender wire is disconnected, then the problem is either in the wiring or the sending unit. If it doesn't drop to empty then the problem is the gage itself.
If it drops to empty, then reconnect the sender wire on the back of the gage and try disconnecting the sender wire at the sending unit on the fuel tank. If the gage drops to empty then the probem is the sending unit. If the gage continues to show full then the problem is a short in the wiring and you will have to trace it down and remove the short. Good luck. |

Hi Hudson River Steve, Thanks for the information, I will hopefully get up to the loch during this week( weather permitting) and disconnect the wires and see what happens.

Re: Fuel Gauge or Sender unit
I have removed the wires from the sender unit an the gauge drops to empty, when I short the wires together it shoots back to full, when I meter out the gauge its ok therefor I think it must be a short in the wiring. I have tried to trace it but it disappears into the loom and I dont really want to start opening the loom up. I was thinking about installing new wires from the back of the gauge to the sender unit. Would this be safe and if I did would I need an inline fuse/
Andy. PS the sun is out in Scotland at long last, I have been posted missing the past 2 weekends. |
Re: Fuel Gauge or Sender unit
Hi Andy,
No fuse is required. You can simply run new wiring. Good Luck |
