Whine Overtop the Usual Engine Noise
 

I have a 2006 SX19 with a 4.3L V6. There is a considerable whine from the engine compartment that seems to be in addition to the usual engine noise. It does seem to be louder at speed than when the engine is idling. I did have to have the lower unit replaced at the end of last season (after striking something underwater) and I know I'm still in the break-in period of that new lower unit but I'd be surprised if the whine is just from the lower unit. It doesn't seem to be related to steering/turning the boat. Engine operation and performance is generally OK. Any suggestions as to what could be causing the loud whine?

It's hard to tell for sure, but I would try and have it checked out by a Mercruiser service facility. They're very familiar with all the noises and problematic symptoms. See if you could get a service tech or mechanic to go on a test ride with you. I'd be a little hesitant to take it out too much until I found out for sure that it's not a significant mechanical issue.
