Cracks on deck floor - 2010 Mariah R19.9

1 Attachment(s)
Just over a month ago I ordered & purchased a 2010 Mariah R19.9 bowrider, this is my first boat. The boat has been great but it has been sent back to the dealer & factory twice to repair cracks in the deck floor (the Sea Fox/Mariah factory is about 30 minutes from me here in South Carolina). Now after picking it up and just driving it home I have yet another crack (3rd one, second in same spot) on the deck floor basically in the middle on the left and right of the walkway to the bow of the boat. Is this normal because I can't imagine it is? Does anyone know what my options are? If I had it my way I would take the boat back to the dealer and get my money back. Aside from the cracks, I have a laundry list of other problems I've had to deal with:

- screws falling out of the chairs
- radio speaker wires disconnecting
- pop-out ski hook breaking
- exposed screw visible through the fiberglass when installing the windows after repairing a poorly painted black dash cover
- windows off-alignment after removing them once to replace the dash covers
- poor installation of one cup holder
- vinyl seat replaced because it had a melt mark in it at delivery
- crack in corner of outer gelcoat at delivery

While most of this is cosmetic, these are problems I would not expect on a new boat. Being a first time boat owner I wanted a boat that would be free (at least minimal) of problems. One huge reason I bought new and not used. Anyone have any help or advice for me?

Thanks!

You should not pay 25000+ dollars for a new boat and have to deal with this. I can understand a few little bugs but the cracking may be a build or design problem. I would sit down and have a talk with someone about what they are willing to do to SOLVE the problem. If you are willing to lay down the money for a brand new boat, you deserve perfection. Just my 2cents.

BTW congrats on the new boat.

Re: Cracks on deck floor - 2010 Mariah R19.9

The dealer said after the 2nd one (I'll be taking the boat back in on Monday to show the 3rd crack) that they would do what it takes to fix this but when is it enough? Am I supposed to be taking a boat in to repair cracks every week or two? I seriously wonder if there is a design flaw or that particular deck mold was not created properly and now I have a problem that is never going to go away. I just realized, I haven't even had the boat a month, I got it 23 May. I've only had it out on the water 3 weekends now.

I think I would check into the lemon law. Hope it gets better for you.

My Mariah is a 1995 model and I have never had any problems approaching what you are referencing... I would take the boat back and buy a model year 2001 or older Mariah.

Talked to the dealer today and they talked to the manufacturer and they want me to run the boat some to see if the cracks get worse or any others pop up. Took the boat out today and I now have another crack in the same spot for a 3rd time (middle of the deck, right side, it was already repaired twice). UGH! The dealer has been great and said they will get this right though. I'm just starting to wonder how they will get it right because they have patched it twice in two different spots and each of those have cracked again.

I think its time you talked to them about replacing the boat.....and let SeaFox figure out what they did wrong with it while you enjoy what you paid for.

Have you considered skipping the middle man (dealer), and going straight to the manufacturer? I'd tow it up to the factory and refuse to leave until it's settled.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this, please keep us updated with any news.

Re: Cracks on deck floor - 2010 Mariah R19.9

Thanks Shabah, after the first crack the dealer sent me straight to the manufacturer (I live between the dealer and manufacturer which each are about 30 minutes from my house). They have been the ones who have done the repair work for the cracks. Right now I am trying to give them both ample time to get the cracks fixed before I start taking a more hardline approach. Through my research it appears there is no lemon law for boats in South Carolina which sucks!

I cannot imagine that they want this sort of visibility.

This is the precise set of reasons why I love my 1995 Jimmy Fulk's Benton, IL built Mariah!

A large sign on a boat being towed around the dealer lot & manufacturer location tends to have some effect..... ;)

Painting a large lemon on the side of the hull could help to enhance the effect of MikeyT's advice :p

BC:
Sorry to hear about your troubles.

I've had my 2009 R19.9 in the water about 2 months now (it's slipped at the marina I bought it from) and haven't had these issues, although I have the carpet option so can't see the floor in the area where you are having those cracks (thinking I should pull up the carpeting to check it out now).

I found a couple of screws rolling around on the floor in the back compartment and had to tighten the bimini structure screws that were coming loose after 2 trips out. Seat screws seem to be OK, but now I'll definitely check them as well. I also found a bunch of "trash" in the engine area (the core from an old roll of electrician's tape, some discarded wire shrouds and pieces of wire), but don't know if that was from the mfgr or dealer prep sloppiness.

I have a feeling the auto-bilge pump feature is not working, as we had a pretty good soaking rain last Friday and when I went up on Saturday, I had to run the bilge pump manually to clear the bilge. Going to have this checked out, although from other posts about the auto-bilge running down the battery, maybe this isn't such a bad thing, especially as I get to the boat at least once a week.

Other than that, everything else has been great; have been very happy with the fit/finish and the performance.

Good luck and keep us informed on your working with Sea Fox.

Andy

Re: Cracks on deck floor - 2010 Mariah R19.9

I dropped my boat off at the dealer a week ago to fix the cracks and other things fixed. I got my boat back today from the manufacturer as they did all the work. One of the Sea Fox/Mariah owners actually brought it to my house. He told me when my boat came back for a third time he took it on as his own project and wanted to make sure it gets fixed right so we have no more problems with it. The repair work on the cracks looks great! He has ensured me it won't crack again because the previous work was just patches, they apparently re-glassed that section and used something called penske. All of it is beyond my understanding but it does look good and seems better than original condition. They also replaced my windshield and dash covers and all of that looks great again (they put the dash covers on very sloppy last time and dinged up the windshield with the drill, every place were a screw was the window frame had a ding in it). The pop-out ski hook (which has broke twice on me) has been replaced with a flush one that I actually like better (he told me they have had issues with the pop-out one and have quit using it). I plan to run the boat all weekend and hopefully the cracks don't come back and nothing else pops up. I will say the 2 folks I have dealt with at Mariah have been great and really do seem that my satisfaction is a top priority to them. Hopefully it is and I have no more problems.

Great to hear that SeaFox finally came to the party and looked after you. It is nice to know that senior management will personally get involved to resolve issues. Looks like they have labor (labour?) issues though.
All the dealings that I have had with Mariah / SeaFox have been first rate.
Happy boating, and let us know how she performed and stood up to your weekend.

Excellent news bailcam! Glad to hear SeaFox/Mariah took the issue seriously and made things right. Here's to hoping there are no further problems!

I agree, great news Bailcam!!

I think is important to recognize a company when it stands behind their customers and products! Every manufactures has a few issues with there products and for those owners who experience the problems, it's great to hear when the manufacture does what's right to fix it, guess third time was the charm here!

A hardy round of applause for Seafox/Mariah for stepping up to the plate and hitting one out of the park!

We had the boat out part of yesterday and all day today. No cracks! :) We put it through the test as we had people in and out of the boat, did lots of tubing, encountered some choppy water in Charleston Harbor (yesterday) and everything looks great! Oh, the new ski hook is a big improvement IMO. Anyway, thanks for the help and advice from everyone and hopefully you won't see me posting about any more problems. Take care everybody!

Hey bailcam, that's great news!

Glad it's all working out and check in every now and then, even if you don't have any problems!

There more to this forum than just fixing stuff!

Till next time, take care,
WetWilly

Re: Cracks on deck floor - 2010 Mariah R19.9

It cracked again! Crack #4, same spot and they said it wouldn't happen. Granted it took 3 weekends instead of one (I noticed it this weekend). I talked to Mariah/Sea Fox today and they want me to enjoy the boat the rest of this season and when I'm ready to store it for the winter they will take it and put a whole new deck on it and run it through their assembly line again treating it like it was a new boat. They are saying minus the hull and the motor just about everything will be replaced. They are putting this in writing for me and I should have something in the next day or two. This whole thing has been crazy and frustrating but I have to say so far Mariah/Sea Fox have been great.

Wow that sucks to hear it's still happening, but props to Sea Fox Mariah putting it in writing and replacing the entire deck at the end of the season! :)

I am so glad I read this. I was seriously looking at this 19 footer, but reading this thread has made me reconsider that in a big way.

I also had stress cracks before the first year, i have stripped out screws every where in the boat. Lots and lots of them. I also have screws sticking out every where also so I know excetly how u feel. It sucks to spend that much money and bascially get told sorry about your luck

I agree, something that costs $25-35,000 should have zero to one small problem in the first few years of ownership.

This site appears to be populated by some really great people. But I now know that I will not become one of the card carrying members of the "Mariah Owners Club". I will do my shopping elsewhere.

Jdecoudres and Bailcam, Best of luck with your boats. I hope all the problems get resolved to your satisfaction.

Are they other model's that are having major problems? I have a deposit on a new SX25 right now and I'm starting to get concerned about it. It seems like a lot of people are having problems with the New Mariah.
