I was considering the XOG, too. Decided against it for the following reasons: - Short battery life
- Flimsy mini-USB port used for charging (imagine a cord hooked to that in a bouncing boat)
- Flimsy, difficult-to-use waterproofing covers over USB port, etc.
- Reportedly impossible to read in bright, direct sunlight
So next I considered the Garmin Nuvi 500 crossover. After fairly extensive research I came to the conclusion it was little better, for a lot more money.
Right now it would appear the Lowrance H2OC with the appropropriate additional chart (Lowrance's charts are much less expensive than Garmin's) is the most cost-effective way to go for a marine hand-held. It gets generally positive reviews, even from long-time owners. That's the way I'm leaning, right now.
The Garmin GPSMap 76C is highly thought of, but it's a relatively tiny screen, it's expensive, and Garmin rear-ends you on charts.
