Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
1 Attachment(s)
I have a friend who is selling this prop (pictures attached). I do not know the pitch/diameter/make/model etc. Any help identifying what it is and if it is worth making an offer is greatly appreciated.
Here is the following info I have..... Prop has the following marks: The number "4" is stamped on the top edge of each blade The letter "U" is stamped on the main body between two of the blades There is a "Square box with a V looking shape" stamped on the inner edge of the hub The hub looks to be rubber Spline count is 15? Diameter - unknown - how do you check? do you just measure across? Pitch - unknown - how do you check? Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm just not sure what it is.. what it's worth.. or if it'll even work on my 2001 Diablo 180 w/3.0L? Thanks, Nick https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...d1025dcfeab2c8 https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...3650f15cdc4a3e https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...d2c3fcf9ab5822 https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...fe61938630e13c https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...535574908fd38d https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...95b57d3f110e40 https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...542c0d9bc17231 https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...3adeb42d8aa9be https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...363e4d9f7c6472 |

Again, I appreciate all the help. I would like to upgrade to a stainless prop - but obviously don't want to buy something that won't work on my boat - or help my boat.
I was told to "just make an offer" on it - so i don't want to insult him either, as he may know what it's worth - or think it's worth much more than it is. To me, i'm unsure what it is other than stainless lol. I would think any manufacturer proud of their products would at least mark their name on it? |
Re: Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
Well it's a cleaver so you won't get any bow lift from it.
Infact cleavers are used on race boats with heavy outboards to give stern lift, which is not a bad thing on a Mariah. just depends on size??? stick it on and try it. just be aware that they can cause a hook in a following sea! |

I'm thinking it's a bad match for my little 3.0L without trying it. I thought I might be able to pick it up for really cheap though... odd that it doesn't have any markings other that a stamped letter and the #4 on each blade.
Thanks again! |

Hmmm! yes. I forgot you had a 3.0L
maybe not then! ship it over and i'l give it a go :wink_thumbup: |
Re: Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
My buddy seems to think it's worth 200.00 lol... i'm laughing because I know it's not worth that for me. However.. maybe it is worth that to someone else. I know absolutely nothing about props. I spoke to the local marina today and they had no idea what brand it was either. But, they are going to send my 19p prop off for repair so I can swap it with my 17p. I'm also considering trying a 21p although that might be to much pitch for my 3.0

So... He doesn't know jack about it EXCEPT it's worth $200?

Re: Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
lol... kinda. He has a windshield set i would love to have too.. but he wants 1800.00 for it... but that's to high for me, but probably more spot on price wise than the prop price

I'm going to send that 19p i have off for a rebuild and run it again. I will swap over to the 17 if we are going to tube. The 19p was slow to get the Mariah out of the hole originally - but now with the smart tabs i'll be curious how much different it performs. |
Re: Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
The new 3.0l mpi only has 135hp so only 5 more than yours if yours is sorted and too many ponies haven't left the stable...
And you have to remember, the new glastron is probably made like a paper bag! |
Re: Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
I suspect you are right - or that the guy I spoke to at the local marina was full of it.
I also talked to a guy on ebay who sells nothing but props. He claims he has a marina and told me to switch from my 3 blade over to a 4 blade 15x16p. I wouldn't mind going to a 4 blade, but with an aluminum prop.. that leaves me one more blade to break. Sooo.. I then talked to Laura at Piranha Props. She claims that their composite props are "stronger" than aluminum - and she linked me to a few videos testing the durability. She also linked me to a few different reviews, and told me that they would switch blades with me until I found the pitch I liked best. I haven't been able to find any credible reviews... just a bunch of nay sayers.. that keep preaching that plastic props are junk. I'm actually thinking I might try one unless I get some actual feedback from someone that had a poor experience. Our river is full of debris.. stumps, rocks, and lord knows what. I've been able to smack 2 props since we've purchased the boat - and I like the idea of being able to switch pieces easily as needed. Andy b - have you heard of any composites in your neck of the woods? Good or Bad? |

and as for being able to just swap blades? that's just sales patter i'm affaid because if you hit something hard enough to damage the blade you inevitably damage the hub slots that you'd fit the new blade too IMHO of course |

If there is that much debris in the water Is consider a jet boat!

Re: Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
We've discussed composite props in a number of threads here. I wont say that they are junk or rubbish but imho they are good as a back-up or 'get me home' prop at best. We need a thumbs down icon.....

Re: Prop Guru's... help me Identify this Prop - pics attached
Surprisingly.. there are very few jet boats around here. Could be because the older one's were hard to maintain and unreliable... and the new one's cost so much that... well... who could afford one. There is a guy with the latest and greatest seadoo down here. I think he's from Akron Ohio and only comes down a few weekends each month to boat at their river lot. I think he told me with all the bells and whistles it was over 58,000? But.. it'll park itself at the dock all on it's own lol.
