Question for Z275 owners...GPS Changeout?
1 Attachment(s)
So, my question is have any 275 owners changed out their GPS to newer units? One of my winter projects was to change out my Lowrance LMS-160 that was factory installed. The screen is fried on it so it is useless. The problem I am now running into is that the new Lowrance Elite is bigger and my dash can't support bigger!(See pic below) The 160 unit is roughly 4.9" x 6.1". So just curious what other 275 owners did....

Re: Question for Z275 owners...GPS Changeout?
Do you want sonar/gps or just gps?
It looks like a Lowrance Globalmap 3 or 5 thousand series chartplotter would fit. Or a LMS 500 series sonar/gps unit would fit. They both measure 6.9" across , but it looks like they might squeeze in there. The Elite 5 series Lowrance is also 6.9" across. Which Elite do you have now? |
Re: Question for Z275 owners...GPS Changeout?
I don't have the Elite model. I have the original from the factory which was way before the Elite. It is the LMS-160 which only measures 4.9" across. So the bigger Elite will not fit. :(
I really don't need sonar, but I would like it. I could just use the factory depth gauge and then get a mapping unit only. |
Re: Question for Z275 owners...GPS Changeout?
I'm confused Chris.
According to the factory specs the LMS 160 is 6.1" accross x 4.9" high. What is the distance between the pods where your 160 is at? It appears as tough there is still a bit of room on each side of your 160 right now. Worst case senario I guess , you could replace it with another 160. |
Hey Colorado! I am an idiot. I was writing the correct dimensions but thinking the wrong ones. I flipped my width and height. Yes, you are correct. It is 6.1" wide by 4.9" high. I was somehow thinking 4.9" wide...guess I am still in a fog from New Years! :)

Don't feel bad , I still am draggin' butt. LOL
Can you measure Chris and see what you got between the pods? I'm bettin' a 6.9" unit will fit. The Elite 5X will go in there if you got 6.9" or a little more hopefully. |
Yea, I will measure it this weekend and see what I got exactly. Appreciate it!

Sounds good Chris.
Let us know the outcome. |
Re: Question for Z275 owners...GPS Changeout?
Call Lowrance. they have a great "trade up" program. theyll take your ol burned up one regardless.
keep in mind that many of the features that are connected to your unit with cables (i.e. transducer, antenna, etc.) may have different connections now with the newer unit. There is a company out there that makes adapters, cant remember their name right now. |
I actually did call Lowrance and told them I would like to get my 160 repaired if possible. They said that it could not. Then they told me that the Elite was much bigger than the 160 and wouldn't fit in the hole and that my transducer would not work with any of the new items because the old operates at 192khz. They never mentioned anything about the trade in program! Go figure!

Here are the measurements: 6 3/4" wide by 5 1/4" tall. This is the max size. I would be rubbing the top and bottom at these measurements!

Re: Question for Z275 owners...GPS Changeout?
I think your stuck getting another LMS 160 Chris.
All the new stuff from Lowrance that I am finding is to big. Have you thought about using another brand? Looks like some of the Garmins might work for ya. |
Yea, I think I will have to switch. Was trying to get by without changing out my antenna and transducer as well, but I guess it won't work. Thanks for the help and insight!

I got a Garmin GPS in my truck and love it. Don't know about humminbirds anymore. Been awhile since I had one.
How much you want to spend? |

Not much to spend. I have a lot of projects this winter and money is tight. Trying to find a rebuilt or good used one. Maybe $300-$400. My boat was equipped with a faria depth gauge and a Lowrance 160. (Mapping and depth sounder). So I can either go with a combo mapping and depth unit or send my depth gauge to Faria and have them fix it and get a mapping unit only for the Lowrance replacement. I really don't need one for my truck. I use my iPhone for GPS in the truck if needed.

The Garmin 421S is in that range. Here are details:

That looks like it might work! I also like that I can add a transducer to it later on if I feel like it. And it has an SD slot for 3d expansion is nice!
