Took my 1996 jubilee out today and had a little prob. If I try to go from idle to wot it starts bogging down. If I back off throttle it stops bogging and starts accelerating. I can get it to wot if I graduly increase throttle. But not if I shower down on it as if I were going to pull a skier out of water. When I gradually increase throttle it will make it to 4800 rpm at 47 mph. No missing just bogging if I try to come out of hole fast. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It could be a variety of things. Carb or MPI/EFI?

I had a similar issue last year with mine bogging down under load, it had similar characteristics to what you're experiencing. I've got the Merc 7.4L MPI engine. I went through all sorts of steps, but the real improvement came I changed the distributor, rotor, and spark plugs. Try this and see if it remedies your situation! Just make sure and use the right plugs specified for your engine, not the standard type of plugs you can get at Autozone or Wal-mart.

You said the dist, rotor, and plugs. Did u replace the dist cap or the whole dist? Thanks. And I only use oem parts.

I have a 5.7 alpha one that I just purchased last September and have not taken out yet. I just decided to replace the coil, distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and change oil. I pulled off the carberator and put a rebuild kit in it due to the carberator was leaking gas all over the intake manifold. I took the black fuel filter off and replaced with Raycor glass filter with water drain nozzle. Going to continue to upgrade my merc. as time allows. I have a Mariah 2000SC that is 20.5 ft in length. Always use marine parts and never automotive.

Technically, the fuel filters with glass bowls are illegal to use on an inboard. You are supposed to use the metal bowl filter. In case of an engine fire the glass bowl can break and further fuel the fire.

That's why I use marine parts like carbs, spark arrester filter, starter, alternator, etc. Canister filters are great for fire but impossible to see water in it so I will take my chance with fire and put out with fire extinguisher and use blower while fueling boat. :-)

I think for total safety, I will move the fuel filter from under the front starboard side of engine and move it to port stern of boat. That way I can change filter or drain any water out in a pan and make it more convenient and safe from engine room fire.
