Shopping for another Mariah - have ?'s

My wife - the same one that was mad when I bought our Diablo became mad when I sold our Diablo. Now she's bummed that we don't have a boat. We have went and looked at a few different models, but so far none of them seem to be as well built as the few Mariah models we've seen over the years. She found a 1999 Mariah Shabah 182 w/190hp V6 in the Dayton Ohio area (still 3+ hours from us... but closer than any others so far).

1999 Mariah Shabah 182 BR 190hp

The boat looks nearly identical to our 2001 Diablo 180 - can anyone tell me the actual difference? I know the interior is nicer looking, it has the hour meter and depth gauge that my Diablo didn't, and an upgraded interior. However, is the hull any different? It looks like the same prestige trailer and hull - except for the anchor storage and an embossed looking stripe/checkmark line mid way back near the windshield... it looks like it's the same as our old boat. Also - did they have snap in carpet in these? This boat looks like it doesn't have carpet? I'm waiting on the owner to write me back and give me some more detail/contact information so we can setup a viewing.

They are asking $8500.00 with 278 hours and regular maintenance with indoor storage. Boat does not include any other items beyond the boat and trailer.

We have it narrowed down to this Mariah and 02 Bryant 198 w/5.7merc, 94 Crownline 225ccr w/5.7merc, and a 99 Rinker 232 w/7.4merc - all of which are within a few thousand on price and all look to be in great condition. I just wish a V8 Mariah would pop up close to home :(

Thanks,
Nick

You have young kids right? Those kids grow and then they bring along their friends. I think you need to go a little larger than the 182...

Re: Shopping for another Mariah - have ?'s

I do, 5 & 6. Great memory Mikeyt! I believe the 182 will be sold. He is showing it to a few different people today. I also found a really nice (per pictures)1996 Z252 that I would love. I just can't justify traveling so far... yet. The other issue is that I don't have a full size truck. If I go to big I'll be borrowing one of dad's trucks (which isn't a big deal being 2 miles from a marina and living next door lol). I just hate to borrow it to take longer trips. I keep hoping one will pop up close to home... but I'm pretty sure my sister in-law got the last nice one in the area (mint mid 90's z packaged cuddy with all the bells and whistles.... Not sure of model.. just know it's in the 20ft range with a big block, captains call, power everything and been very well kept ). I imagine that's the main reason my wife wants another boat again lol.

Re: Shopping for another Mariah - have ?'s

Our boats must have been a rare breed.... I hate to go to another brand... as I doubt I would be as happy. However I'm trying to stay in the $8,000 range with a max of $13,000.. so that might make it even harder to find a nice, well kept, quality boat.

If anyone in Ohio, WV, Pa., or Ky plan on selling.... I hope they post on the forum first lol

I have been stalking craigslist for the last 3-4 months without much luck. I use search tempest and zoom the list to search by state or locally. I've kept an eye on Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia without much luck. I noticed a few listed on the forum, but I haven't received any responses. I'm hoping to find something before the end of the month... i've already cleared a spot in one of the garages! lol.

I was going to buy my cousin's Rinker Captiva 206 - but it's to far gone to consider rebuilding. It needs a motor and all new interior.. possibly a section of floor. Plus I'd have to get a top and covers for it... and trailer tires... and other odds and ends. I just don't have the time to work on it while remodeling our house. As for other boats... I really want a Mariah... but I've tried to keep the search open to other models... because Mariah's don't seem common in the mid ohio valley.

Thanks again!

Nick

Has anyone ever heard of a 1995 Mariah 215 Davanti? I found someone who claims they have one for sale. It looks really clean in the photos... However I don't see any decals that offer a designation. Boat is sitting on a tandem axle Eagle trailer that looks clean as well. If anyone has heard of this model.. any info is greatly appreciated.. If I can get a response from the owner I may take Monday off to head up and see it.

Thanks!

Fingers crossed - I messaged one of the sellers on FB and am waiting to hear if it is still available. My wife really wants a Bowrider.. I want a Cuddy... and since affording and finding one of the mid cabins isn't happening I guess it'll come down to which ever one pops up closest for the right price.

Thanks!

Nick

Can any of you guys Identify which model this is? 1992 Mariah 20' Bowrider

This boat is very close to home, but it's older than I was wanting to go... however the exterior of the boat looks clean. I've passed it on the water in the past, but never noticed the interior. I'm not sure whats going on with it. The price seems high.. but i'm not sure.. i suppose it comes down to demand here. I sold my Diablo for way more than I thought I could...

Possibly going to look at the 1995 Davanti 215 with captains call exhaust and 5.7L in the morning.

The boat listed on the FB page looked amazing, but they are no longer selling it (don't blame them... looks beautiful).

Also got an amazing offer on a (probably going to get hate on this) 1996 Rinker Captiva 232. It's a 1 owner garage kept boat with under 100 hours on it. It has the camper top, bimini, storage cover, and snap on mooring cover - not to mention all the accessories. The guy was asking 18,000 - then 14,000... and I told him I would have to look at it and am trying to stay at 10,000 or less. The guy is an old farmer and bought it off a friend who needed money - he said he never boated and didn't plan on starting. Just bought it to help them.. and is trying to get his money back. So... if the Davanti is a bust.. this is on my radar.

Let me know your honest thoughts... cause i'm having problems finding a Mariah :(

Re: Shopping for another Mariah - have ?'s

Okay - setup appointment to go see the 215 Davanti on Monday or Tuesday.

Boat owner purchased it new in 1996. It's been in storage most of it's life, and was kept inside up until a little over a year ago. Boat is supposedly all stock, although the marina installed captains call exhaust as part of the purchase back in 96.

It has the following options....
windshield wiper
overhead console in cuddy
captains call exhaust (supposedly has a bad solenoid or switch - as they won't open? they are stuck on the silent side)
factory cassette/speakers
convertible top (needs restitched but material supposedly in great shape)
depth gauge (however it doesn't work)
stainless prop (couple different ones)
newer skis, tube, and ski vest.
All safety equipment, oars etc.

includes a tandem axle eagle trailer with newer brakes and bearings

Anything I should look for on this boat? any known problems with this model? Interior and exterior are supposedly stain, tear, scuff, and weather free. Owner claims it's almost like new.. and the nicest 95 i'll ever find. He said the wine colored exterior has the same gloss to it as the day he purchased it... and the interior is equally impressive for it's age.

Price is $7500.00 - does not include any covers, just the convertible top that needs some work.

I also have a 1999 Rinker 232 (5.7L) (Bravo 1) Stainless prop and all safety equipment, garage kept and never left on water over night. We are supposed to view it tomorrow. It's an extremely low hour boat, with everything included.

Any thoughts..... I want to stay Mariah... but I love the lay out of the Rinker.

Re: Shopping for another Mariah - have ?'s

The Rinker Captiva is a nice boat & its 4 yrs newer so likely has efi on the engine vs the carbed 1995. It will also have just a touch more room than the Davanti but the only way to know is get on them and get a feel for how each boat will fit your needs for the next few years. Then get them on the water if possible.

Thanks Mikey! I just got a bunch of pictures of the Davanti - it's nice and fairly clean, but the owner admitted to storing it the last few seasons outside. I thought it had been garage kept the whole time. The convertible top is shot, and he does not have a cover - just an old blue tarp :(

I don't think the captains call exhaust would be hard to fix... and the depth finder not working isn't a huge deal. The motor is a newer 350 vortec with the Thunderbolt Ignition. Beyond that.. I don't know much more. The guy was really nice and said he was willing to take us on a test ride. He just said to give him a day so he could hook all the hoses up and put a battery on it. He self winterized it the last 4-5 years by draining everything. Again, decent boat with nice options.. but the maintenance sounds minimal (he's never changed an impeller for example). Price is $7500.00 (but i'll need to buy a cover, bimini, and trailer tires)

The Rinker.. it just doesn't have the wow factor as the fancier Mariah's... so I dunno. If the 232 looks like it does in the pictures.. I may jump on it. I DO NOT like the fact that Rinker has a mixed reputation. I've ready good to awful stuff about them. They don't have a very good forum either. Then again, nothing compares to this forum and the wealth of knowledge.

Thanks again! I'll keep everyone posted on which way we go.

Nick

Re: Shopping for another Mariah - have ?'s

I looked at a Captiva 232 as well, and they are nice boats. Rinker doesn't make an awful product. I do feel like for some reason they get a bad reputation as being relatively cheap, but I've never seen anything that would be enough to sway me away. My friend had a Fiesta Vee 342, and it was a very well built boat. Their cruiser line offers a lot of boat and options for the money. And who could complain about a company that integrates a built-in blender on their cruisers? :)

I'd be a little leary of a boat that hasn't been reasonably maintained. DIY boat maintenance is fine, but if he's using a blue tarp to cover it, hasn't *properly* winterized the engine in 4-5 years, or changed the impeller, i'm pretty sure not a lot of attention has been given to taking good care of it. I may want to get a second opinion from a Mercruiser mechanic, or surveyor before signing on any paperwork.

The trick here is Nick, you can't be in a rush. If you want to get what you want, you need to be patient. Don't buy something only to settle. You're talking a pretty serious amount of money and a financial commitment. Get what you want, not just what's available, otherwise you'll regret it in the long term. If you want a nice Mariah, be patient. We're just getting started in the season, so you're not going to find an awful lot of them right now. Give it time.

1995 Davanti 215 - have questions

I thought I would start a new thread, as my wife and I have decided not to pursue the 99 Rinker Captiva 232. The owner of the 95 Mariah Davanti 215 has sent me a fair amount of photos, which I wanted to share and get opinions. I think the boat will clean up, and the oxidizing on the hull looks minor (probably from being stored outside the last couple of years).

Here is what I know about the boat per the owner. Won't be able to go see it till later in the week (possibly Thursday).

1995 Davanti 215 Wine on White
1 owner - all original minus dealer installed captains call exhaust and motor.

The Good -

Original interior that is scuff, tear, and stain free
Newer Jasper Marine 350 vortec with thunderbolt ignition etc. (installed by Mercruiser mechanic at local marina)
Cuddy is very clean inside, overhead console works
Trailer is solid for an all original 95, and the brakes and bearings were replaced in 2012
No noticeable scratches or gouges in the hull - beyond worn decals from docking.
All original glass in good shape, with working windshield wiper
solid floors
1 owner with all original paperwork and some maintenance records
All safety gear - vests, skis, tube (all purchased in the last 2-3 years) included
3 props - 1 stainless 3 blade, 1 aluminum 3 blade, 1 aluminum 4 blade (new)

The Bad -

Trailer tires are original, but have minimal dry rot
Minor oxidization on the hull
Convertible top needs some stitching fixed
No cover
Interior needs cleaned up after being in storage the last 2 years
depth gauge doesn't work (unknown reason)
Captains Call Exhaust does not work, currently stuck on the silent side
Owner maintained/winterized since new motor was put in - could be good - could be bad. He claims he stopped taking it to the local marina because they supposedly improperly winterized it, leading to him replacing the motor.

Boat is currently sitting in a storage yard (for the last 2 years), supposedly it was kept in a garage/barn prior to that and never left in the water over night. He claims that it has always been tarped fairly well since it was moved to outside storage. No hour meter, but he said he rarely used it, and that it wasn't even brought out of storage for 4-5 seasons. He estimates the engine to have 20 hours on it - if that (again no meter.. just his word)

Owner was asking $7500.00, but said he would sell for $6000.00. Any thoughts are appreciated. I like the design of the boat and layout, and I believe it'll fit in my garage without much issue. I have attached pictures below... which show the boat as it currently sits. It has the usual black grime from sitting, and what the owner explained as a tarp that fell apart.

Thanks,
Nick

The list of the bad things does not sound too bad considering the boat is almost 20 years old. Did they mention if it was a salt or fresh water boat?

I don't believe the boat was used much. The owner told me he purchased it new at a boat show in 1996. For the first few years him and his wife took it out.. then they divorced and it was put in his barn for years without seeing the water. He met his current wife around 2000... they pulled it out of the barn and he discovered that it wasn't winterized properly before being stored. Thus he had to replace the motor. He opted to go with a Jasper Marine 350 and a Holly 4 barrel carb. He said the motor is a vortec model so he had to buy a bunch of new stuff to retrofit it in place of the original 305. He ran it for a few seasons off and on after that, but it hasn't been in the water for the last two years. He said he would show it running etc. before accepting any money. He claims that the depth gauge and captains call being stuck in silent mode are the only problems...

Will I be able to tell if the exhaust bellows and stuff are good without taking it on the water? I plan on replacing the impeller and working on the exhaust first thing, but can add Bellows to the list if they are to old.

Thanks again for the advise and opinions!

Nick

Started the search again (who am i kidding... havent really stopped... still silently stalking the interwebs for a decent deal) after deciding not to pull the trigger on the above Mariah. Perhaps as the weather starts to warm in Ohio I will see some new boats pop up for sale.
