Replacement Boat Guages?!
I have a 96 Mariah Shabah 180 and my oil pressure gauge and speedometer quit working, I was looking into replacing all the gauges, giving the boat a fresher look. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to start? Also, I've been trying to trace the speedometer wires and cannot see where they go, does a boat just use a "spinner" sensor somewhere by the outdrive?

Check eBay under a search for "Mariah". A seller named GreatLakesSkipper has a few of the gauges. Of course, that's only if you would prefer keeping it "original". Otherwise, any marine center would have replacement gauges. They are a standard size and pretty easy to install.
Chances are, your speedometer line is plugged or disconnected. Check the outdrive, just above the nose cone for a tiny hole. Make sure there's nothing plugging it (I've taken a drill bit and turned it by hand to get any grime out of there). Then check just above that for the tube. It should be connected to a plug securely. I've also had to unplug from the speedometer, then blow through the tube to be sure nothing is clogging it. |
My boat uses faria gauges. They replaced one for me last year, and were able to save the mariah background. Just follow the warranty instructions at faria-instruments.com

Awesome, I'll check for the speedometer. I did see that seller, he has some nice gauges sets that I;m looking at as well :) thanks for the help guys.

I read this post after i responded to your other post about the blowers. I have the same boat but unfortunately mine is in storage for a while yet. Hmmm...i'm wondering now if the two problems (dash gauges stop working / blower wont shut off) are related. The blower situation sounds like a short circuit where an always live wire is touching the power wire to the blowers. Before you go out & spend money on the gauge replacement i would resolve the blower issue first. One may just 'fix' the other.
Again, we do have wiring diagrams / manuals etc available to contributing members. Click on "donate" above and all will be explained. |
Cameron, my speedo wasn't working when I got mine. Found out that it had melted, so I had the dealer repair it, which was just a simple hose line run the dash that ended up costing me $120. The pickup for the speedos can get clogged, and mine does quite a bit on the river during higher waters. The drill bit trick works, you can also use a bent coat hanger or a small nail to clean the hole out. The good news is, I'm pretty close to you, so before you do anything drastic like replacing the gauges, drop me a line and maybe I could come help you diagnose things a bit.
and mikeyt, I believe you've got him mixed up with Roger Butterfield. |
Sweet, I'll give the drill bit a try and see where I get, if no luck, I'll hit you up! Thanks man! ;)

This maybe a long shot, but Faria gauges have a limited Life time warranty so it wouldn't hurt to try and file a claim. Click Here.
They also have a quick tip/trouble shooting guide that might be useful. Click Here. Good luck, WetWilly |
ooops....:shakehead:

Anyone have detailed instructions on locating the speedo hole or plug by the out-drive? I can;t seem to find it to inspect and clean it out. Thanks!

Hi Cameron,
I may be wrong (MikeyT will let us all know this) but the picture attached will show you where mine is located - this ISNT my bravo leg by the way. |
Hi CameronBrian2120,
Here are a couple of pictures of our outdrive to help you locate the intake and tubing. Now this is a Bravo III but if you have the Alpha Gen II then they are fundamentally the same. The pencil tip is stuck in the very small Speedometer intake hole. Another place to look for a possible problem is where indykoch was referring to, at the plastic connector for the outdrive to transom assembly tubing (we found ours disconnected when we bought her). http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...bingroute1.jpg Here's a photo of the speedometer tubing and connector at the outdrive indykoch was saying to check. Yours should be a twist connector, make sure it's firmly coupled. http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...ometertube.jpg WetWilly |

Here is a picture for you I got out of my manual. I hope this helps. I would also check to see if your pilot tube is diconnected in the out drive. I just found mine to be diconnected last night. Another member directed me to it. I never new it was there. It is located in the center of the outdrive just above the hydrolic trim cylinders towards the boat. You can put your hand it there and reconnect it if it came off. You can look through the opening with a flashlight and see if it is off also. Good luck.
Let me know how you made out. Dave I tried to send you a picture but it was to big and I don't know how to change it so if you Email me at [email protected] I can send you a picture that way. |

I would like to get that gouge on the rear portion of my skeg fixed up. Downside is, once it goes into water, it is in there till September. If I could find a used and not abused trailer for somewhat cheap-ish, I would consider it. That way it doesnt have to be offloaded onto blocks each season. |
I know this is an old thread but I have some questions as we are going to the lake today. I found the plastic thing on the outdrive and where it takes the waters in. If I disconnect the plastic thing (it is white and is a 1/4 turn lock, and induce air from the plastic/hose and blow the crap out (hopeing it is between the inlet and plugs, I won't hurt anything will I? So if there was crap in the line it would come out where the inlet is. Just don't want to hurt anything. I have the 5.0L V8 Alpha one. Thanks guys and hope all goes good. Also does the fish well AKA beer cooler have a drain in it correct? Do you just screw/unscrew it to drain it. Hardly go fishing so this would make a very good cooler haha. Thanks guys, lets get boating cause the end is near our season!!!!:(:(:(:(

Hi 95Z212,
You shouldn't cause any damage as long as the air pressure isn't too high (I would stay below 80psi). Now depending on what’s causing the blockage, the air may not be enough. If this is the case, try to find a thin piece of solid copper electrical wire about half the diameter of the hole and try to snake it to the obstruction in the lower leg, starting from where the connector is and going down. As for the cooler drain, our 94 Talari has a plastic kitchen sink type strainer/stopper at the bottom of the cooler. Pull it out or lift it slightly and give it a little turn to stay up and drain. Re: Replacement Boat Guages?!
Thanks for all the comments here, just picked up my 1999 212 Shabah and the only thing that isn't working is the speedo...I will try all of the suggested trouble shooting tips tomorrow!

Re: Replacement Boat Guages?!
How accessible is the conection of the hose to the transom assembly? I ran new tubing from the speedo to the interior side of the transom but can`t seem to see the exterior connection. For the time being I have just used a butt connector but given the condition of the old hose, I`d much rather run new tubing all around.
