more interior vinyl questions...
Si it appears I have found my colors in the Nautolex Capitano Vinyl at Gary's Upholstery. However, looking at the vinyl that is original it appears to have a felt like backing to it where the new samples do not. Do I need to find vinyl with this felt backing? Is it the same as buying 1/4" foam backed vinyl? I would assume I want the backing for where it wraps around edges so the edges are padded and don't look sharp or cheaply done. Any suggestions here from experience would be awesome.
Also I am planning on re-covering the following pieces: -Sunpad -Rear bench - seat bottoms, seat backs and headrests. (I'll probably leave the lower box/base alone) -2 captian's chairs and -the top side trim pieces that are mounted to the side panels (I would call them secondary or accent panels they run from the dash to the rear seat) how much vinyl will I need or how should I go about figuring it? Should I take the stuff to the upholstery shop and let them tell me? http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8wbrgsrc.jpg as a note: in that picture (from when I looked at the boat to buy it) the vinyl looks tan or really off white! Once cleaned it was actually white! lol. Magic erasers, as recommended by members here on MOC, do absolute wonders for vinyl cleaning! |
Re: more interior vinyl questions...
Well, I got some answers by the super helpful staff at Gary's upholstery! The felt backing indicates that it is a "spun back" vinyl. The expanded back vinyl like the capitano is a better product in some regards. The spun back vinyl is generally softer to the touch and more flexible but is prone to splitting. The expanded back vinyl supposedly doesn't split. So I am assuming that I will give up a little suppleness in the vinyl for a more durable product. Not sure I will notice the difference. As long as it looks and feels like Mariah quality I'll be happy. I definitely don't want to "cheapen" my Mariah!

Looks like you have the answers to your questions and yes, i would go with the more durable material.
Dig up all of the contact info for Gary's Upholstery (address/phone's/email/website?) and i will add them to our vendors list. |

Just be prepared. Initial estimates on vinyl work may make your heart skip a beat. Especially when using high quality vinyl like the OEM stuff. :yikes: VINYL RE-UPHOLSTERING ESTIMATE |

I got a quote for the sun pad and head rests for $500 even. That was with a quality vinyl. I can't recall the name. I have a Shabah 250, sun pad looks like yours. Just trowing that out there. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk |

And that price was without the "Mariah" on the head rest.

Re: more interior vinyl questions...
The place I am going to have do it is a little old lady that does some very awesome work. She did a car for me several years back and was very reasonable. I am expecting a thousand to 1200 dollars plus the vinyl. If you want close to the original vinyl look up Capitano at Gary's upholstery you can find him on the web. That is the same manufacturer as our original vinyl and has the same protective coatings. It is an expanded back however where are original was a spun back.

Re: more interior vinyl questions...
Excellent. I was looking into some Morbern brand which had good reviews. I would like to stick with original thought. Thanks for the heads up

Re: more interior vinyl questions...
The capitano is the closest to original. It's made by omnova is a nautolex vinyl treated with a prefixx coating. The grain is pretty close too from what I can tell. Of you have the bright white and tan like I do your colors are in jail white and mushroom in the Capitano line. If those are not your colors Gary's upholstery will gladly send you samples.

As a note omnova made the original vinyl. It was a Nautolex, prefixx vinyl as well.

Re: more interior vinyl questions...
Stupid auto correct!!! Gel white!! Our boats were also made in a off white cream/ivory color. Mine was bright white, same as the hull.

Re: more interior vinyl questions...
Still waiting to make a final selection on my final vinyl and color choice but the little old lady upholsterer called and said the two captains chairs, back bench, and sunpad will be a grand total of.... $500 labor. Plus embroidery of the Mariah logos. Sweet!!!!

Re: more interior vinyl questions...
So here is a small update. I ordered the Capitano Gel White and colorguard natural for my tan. BIG SUPRISE ON THE CAPITANO!!! The grain pattern is not even close to what was originally in our boats and has a very pronounced "flowering patterned grain" without a better way to describe it. I said it looked like it belonged in a grandmother's house with flower curtains lol. The color guard however has a very close, smoother grain to it. So in short my colors were color guard Snow White and colorguard natural for the tan in case anyone was wondering. Although expensive!! ($24/yd.) It is also prefixx treated which is a highly stain and abrasion resistant coating. So it will double the cost but help me keep my sanity as I almost had a coronary when I saw the pattern on the capitano. Even my usually VERY UNOPIONATED, non vocal wife (and I mean that seriously) took one look at it and said "...uhhhh, ...No!" lol. Hope this helps someone else out looking for vinyl! I will add so far Gary's upholstery has been awesome to work with!
