It just died on me

Took the boat out yesterday and for the better part of the day it ran great. We crossed the lake anchored up and hung out and floated and drank beer:wink_thumbup:

Afterwards we loaded up and got ready to head back to our dock. It cranked fine and as I gave it gas to leave we made it about 20 yards under full power and then it just fizzled out and died on me and would not restart. It cranks fine but no start. All fuses were fine and when I'd pump the throttle we could smell fuel so I figure its getting gas. I thought maybe the kill switch got touched because that happened to me before but that wasn't it either.

When looking around nothing is jumping out at me so I don't know where to start. Needless to say but we ended up being towed back

The boat is a 97 Shabah 180 4.3 Volvo

Pull a plug wire and see if it has spark.

Sounds more like a fuel issue. If it cranked and started, you had fuel and spark. If it ran and died, loss of fuel. Check fuel filter and or pump. If fuel injected might have a clogged jet. You can start an engine and pull a wire and it will still run, it will run rough but it will run. If fuel is cut off it will die right away. Just my 2 cents

Engine needs 3 things to run; fuel, spark, and compression. You can check for fuel and spark pretty easy and narrow it down.

hi I have a 2000 z202 same thing! I have replaced the fuel separater, spark plug wires, spark plugs, coil, cap, rotar, pick up, and fuel pump. It runs great, but when you shut it off for a while to swim or hang out, when you try to start it back up it spits and sputters a few times and then nothing. Just cranks over. But if you let it sit for several hours it will start and run fine until you go to start it up again. I have thrown about $800 at this problem with no change. HELP PLEASE!!!

Mine did that and it was vapor locking. Aggrivating.

Re: It just died on me

Well I finally got around to trying to figure out the problem. This past weekend I got it out in the driveway, hooked up the muffs turned on the hose. I gave it a couple pushes on the throttle, turned the key and nothing, it just cranked over. I popped the hatch and started pulling stuff off. I got the cover and spark arrestor off and noticed the carb was dry as a bone and couldn't smell any fuel. I went back gave it some throttle a few more times and nothing no fuel in the carb. I started working the throttle at the carb and after a few open close motions fuel started spraying. Sure enough I sat back down in the drivers seat turned the key and it fired right up and ran fine. It idled fine and revved fine when I gave it throttle etc.

I must have jacked with that boat for an hour on the lake and couldn't get it to fire and all of the sudden it starts working. Its obviously a fuel issue. My guess is fuel pump??? If not that what else could it be? Where is the fuel pump located? Are they hard to change?
