Trailer question asap input needed Thanks!

I have to go pick up a trailer tomorrow to enable me to pick up the 99 Mariah 202 I am purchasing from a local dealer (no trailer included or available for sale). I have seen these on single and dual axle trailers. I found this single axle that has potential to get me the brakes I want. I have experience towing but don't know squat about boat trailers. This thing had a 21 foot on it. Please tell me if you think this will work, if you tow a 20 ft 2500lb Mariah on a single axle, etc. The guy will take 750 for it. The only other option I can find is a non matching blue dual axle for 1200... and I can't really afford to spend that much. I do however need a trailer that will work for my boat. I know my buddy has` been pulling his 20ft bayliner (cringe...) on a single w/ no brakes for 4 years with no issues. My tow vehicle is a 2000 Durango r/t 5.9l 4wd. Thanks for the quick help guys. I have no time to make an error on a trailer purchase. Here's the one I'm looking at $750

19 to 21 Boat trailer

Are the brakes drum or disc? What brand/type of brake actuator?

Please check the wheel bearings.

My opinion is budget 200-300 for brake n bearing fixup....

surge brakes, hydraulic drums. Needs shoes and one brake line. No problem for me to fix. Will the single axle be fine with my boat?

Weight limit for the axle is likely 3500lb - I would pull the axle specs just to make certain. Other thing to verify is the weight limit on the tires.

It looks pretty nice if you can make those small repairs.

so the single axle IS ok as long as it's 3500lbs. The guy said a 21 ft came off it. A tandem axle would be nice but it's not necessary? Is there any real detriment to having a single axle trailer with my boat?

Re: Trailer question asap input needed Thanks!

Shouldn't be an issue - I strongly suggest having a spare tire!

I have a dual axle trailer for a Z240 - which is substantially heavier - and I actually had a wheel blow off while driving so having another axle was nice. It is one of the many calamities that are directly related to my Ex! :rolling_laugh:

Re: Trailer question asap input needed Thanks!

lol - now you DO have me worried about a single axle LOL
looking at internet pictures. I have seen a few 20ft boats on singles but it seems:
19 ft and under are on singles
20ft and over on tandems
???
If this trailer works I'm good with it and I will be able to sleep tonight... lol. If you guys think I need to spend extra for a dual and that it would really be worth the extra I may keep looking. If not I found my trailer...
Thanks for the help

I got a single axle for my 03 sx 19 that is 2800 pounds. It works good. Agree get a spare tire I just blew one and glad I had one.

am I going to have to adjust the bunks on the one I posted a link for? Will I be able to put it on it for now you think and adjust them later if needed?

Loosen the bunk mounts until they are moveable with hand force before you load , once boat is on , make sure it is sitting good on the bunks , then tighten the bunks up , strap her down , head home.:)

That's IF they're adjustable. A little hard to tell from the pics, but they don't look like they are... Usually adjustable ones use u-bolts, which I don't see, or maybe my eyesight is going with my old age. :) What I can see though is, that trailer was made for an Astro bass boat, and if you've ever seen one, they are very low profile, and have a different hull design, so I'm not sure if it'll work or not. You definitely don't want bunks sitting on your strakes, especially while trailering. If the bunks are adjustable though, it shouldn't be a problem. But the winch post might be a little low, so you may have to consider replacing that? The price is good, I'm just not sure if a bass boat trailer would be right for your boat. It's just my opinion, but maybe you should keep looking?

The general rule I've always seen is 20+ boats use tandems. Looking at the Chariot Trailer brochure from 1997 (Mariah's in-house trailer company), the trailer they recommend for the 202 is a tandem axle. They even used tandems for the 19 footers.

Sharp eye Chris...........sharp eye.:eek_animated:

Re: Trailer question asap input needed Thanks!

As Chris has pointed out the dead rise on that trailer is way to shallow for a 20' Mariah
I know things are slightly different over here in the UK but even my 180 is on a twin axle trailer.

19 to 21 Boat trailer

Good call on the dual axle.
A 20 footer is a big pull for a Durango, let alone on a single axle trailer.
Dual axle means you can get some balance. The dual axle trailer is just that a trailer..not a teeter totter taking weight off and on your Durango.
My Mariah is only 2 feet longer. No way I'd go single axle, Even a 5000lb axle. I've not seen a single axle trailer with brakes.
I have a 2500 GMC long box crew and it knows my boat is behind it. I went so far as to swap the factory Eagle trailer to electric brakes from the factory surge.

Re: Trailer question asap input needed Thanks!

I bought the tandem, its ugly to me and will really clash with the boat!! (that's what paint's for) and hey, I can't see it from the water... One big drawback, I have to add brakes... not too happy as I thought it had brakes installed... However the tandem is a good starting point and should work fine for now. the rest of it's in pretty good shape considering it was in a field with a junk 20ft sea ray on it. I was in a pinch as I have to pick up the boat tomorrow after work. Thanks again for all the help.

Don't feel bad I have to do some to mine too. Like a touch up paint job brakes and tires possibly new bunks too.

Re: Trailer question asap input needed Thanks!

Got the bunks adjusted today when I pulled it off at the ramp. Boat now sits perfect on the trailer. Tows really good behind the Durango. Brakes ok if you take it easy and pay attention. Now it needs some outer bunks installed, a paint job, larger tires at some point and I will add brakes when funds are available. Have a few boat issues I want to resolve first.

I cheapest for brake kits I found was on amazon. Tires are not cheap I paid 180 per tire with rim. Love boats but they are money pits. At least u didn't have to get a new motor. I did and it cost me 3800.
