Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
Hi
I have a 1994 Talari 220 with a 5.7L merc and alpha one gen II outdrive. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the gear ratio should be for this combination. |
Re: Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
Take your pick....
5.7 L (A1) 250 4400-4800 1.62 5.7 L (B1) 250 4400-4800 1.65 5.7L EFI 260 4400-4800 1.47 5.7L EFI 260 4400-4800 1.65 All drives are usually marked in two places. First place to check is the port side of the drive shaft housing for a decal with the gear ratio marked on it. Second place is to look on the universal joint splined yoke where there will be a letter stamped. The letters for any of the above are: F = 1.47 & C = 1.62 and 1.65. |
Re: Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
A single axle trailer for that big boy? How does it tow?
|
Re: Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
It tows fine. Luckily I do not have far to tow to launch it.
Would a wrong gear ratio be the cause for struggle with getting up on plane? |
Re: Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
Possibly , but more than likely prop size is the culprit.

Re: Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
I thought we went thru this with you last summer. I assume you've never resolved the problem? I think you mentioned you had a 19" prop on the boat at the time? If so that prop, assuming its in good condition, should be adequate for your boat. There is very little difference between the 1.62 and 1.65 gear ratio's so unless someone has put something radically different that shouldn't be the problem either.

Re: Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
Yes we did have discussions about this last year. Still having the same problems this year.
I have checked the serial numbers with mercruiser and the ratio should be 1.5:1. Which it is. The bost just seems very sluggigh gettin gout of the hole. Timing is correct (4degBTDC). changed coil, wires, fuel filter.checked compression it all is good there. I'm stumped. Could it possibly be the fuel pump? |
Re: Gear Ratio Alpha One Gen II
I doubt that the fuel pump would have that effect. Compression is good on all cylinders & it runs well otherwise?
The other suggestions i could make is going to a 4 blade 19" or 20" prop and consider installing a set of Smart Tabs. |
