Did an outdrive refit last year and should have done the cable.
Once back together it would stall on shifting.
I tried adjusting the switch, no go.
Pulled drive, again, put in a new cable.
Problem gone.
My understanding is the switch momentarily cuts the spark, allowing a smooth shift.
If the shift is not exact the spark cut is too long and the engine stalls. Docking and putting it back on the trailer became very frustrating to say the least.
If you are pulling the drive, I recommend new boots and a water pump since you're half way there anyway and the boat is 18 years old........

just got the boat back from the shop. the replaced the shift cable and also did the gimble bearing.
problem fixed!!!!
