Bilge Pump replacement
 

I'm replacing the original Mayfair pump with an Atwood. The problem I'm running into is the old Mayfair was an automatic pump thus was wired with four different wires, two to the pump and another two that went to the float device. My new Atwood has only two wires, brown and black and when I connect them to the brown and black wires that went to the old pump I have no power.

It appears as though the two wires running to the float device (old pump) were spliced from the same power wire running to the pump. My problem is there is a third brown and white wire that I have no idea what to do with it and I'm thinking this is my problem. Would the brown and white wire be a ground? If you anyone has replaced their bilge I'd love some insight. Thanks,

I may have found the answer to my questions. I forgot to look at the wire schematics here on the sight :shakehead:. It appears as though the brown and white wire is the fuse/power wire. So I'm still not sure how to wire all three to the two black and brown wires provided on the new pump?

Not to rob your post but I have an atwood with a float and now it runs constantly without water or the switch. There is 4 wires down there 2 brown running to the float and a black and a brown running to the bilge. It is very hard to access mine under the motor and have now way of getting my hand down there very well. I dont know if I need to replace both or if I can just cut the float ones to make it a manual with my switch. I am leaving Friday for the Ozarks and dont want to be without the bilge just in case. What to do?

It is definitely up to you, but I imagine you can do exactly what you are describing but I'm no electrical genius but you might be breaking a circuit and then nothing will work. I ended with the Atwood but I only used the brown and black wires. There was a third brown and white wire, however, I have no clue what it's purpose and it didn't affect the way mine ran. The caveat being my new one is strictly manual.

Good luck, sorry I'm of little help. Putting in the new one was a one-handed job for sure as I could barely reach it as well.

Oh, one more thing, you might try taking the pump out and giving it a good cleaning. I'm willing to bet there is something causing the float to stick. I did have the problem last year and it was just a leaf that was making the float stick. Check that first.

Where did you even get your arm down there at? So you just have your black and brown wired to it? and the other 2 that ran to float capped off? I just might leak it all hooke up as is and just disconnect and reconnect the fuse if needed next week and tackle this when I get back from vacation. I appreciate the insight though.
