Bow cooler
 

I have a 1997 Shabah 210 LE. Under the very front bow seat cushion is what I assume is a cooler. First off, is this correct? It has a drain and is lined with plastic. If this is indeed a cooler, do they hold ice very well? And what size drain plug does it take?

It is a cooler and no drain plug is needed. You want this to drain as ice melts. Mine will hold ice for a full day depending on use (kids opening and closing it).
I also have the passenger side console beverage cooler which I stock with ready to use items and replenish from bow cooler. That way we dont open the bow cooler as much. Again, I have had it hold ice a full day.

I'm an idiot. I never realized the passenger cooler was a cooler. I just thought it was a large storage compartment with a drain. I'm going to start using that one next time!


The bow cooler is really nice. It works really. Yesterday I had 12 cans and a 10 lb bag of ice and it was just about half full.

Might have to use mine. I've always carried a regular cooler but that would free up floor space and leg room. I just wasn't sure how well it would stay cold.

What about the swim platform cooler? Or rope holder or whatever it is. Looks like a cooler, with a drain, but when sitting in the water, it fill up with a few inches of lake water, which melts ice very quickly. Also it fills with fumes with the gas tank vent directly above the cooler. I tried it once and had warm beer that tastes like gas. It does make a great trash can though!

I've used the "swimdeck" cooler before in a Shabah 180 I used to own, I had a plug in it to keep out the lake water. It didn't keep ice very long so that is why I was asking about the bow cooler. I would still like to know the size of the drain hole if anyone knows.

You're probably best off measuring it yourself. Different models might have different size plugs. I just peeked at mine and it's 3/4". Hope that helps.

3/4" is probably correct. I tried a 1" I had laying around and it is too big.

Well dont be so hard on yourself. It makes a better storage compartment than a cooler. If you take a peek under the console you will notice there is no insulation around it and ice melts very quick.
I am actually going to try to insulate mine this year. It is very easy to get to from under the console.

I never thought about using the swim platform as a cooler. It is advertised in the brochure as a wet storage compartment. But I suppose it can double as one. I just keep my ski and mooring ropes in there.
I dont think mine ever filled with lake water or fumes so that is peculiar. The drain is directly on the aft starboard side but it ties into other drains so there may be a little blockage somewhere in the line(s).
