21.5 foot Talari - can anyone tell me more?

Hi there,

First post so please be gentle....

Am looking to buy a Talari Cuddy boat which I think is a 1998 and is 21.5 feet long.

Can anyone tell me a bit more about these - what the difference is between a Shabah and a Talari?

It is NOT the "Z" model sadly (I know that came with a lot more toys) but nevertheless it seems in good condition.

The boat has the 7.4 motor fitted (I am trying to find out if EFi or Carb) so I expect that has around 270hp or so - what kind of performance would I be able to expect?

Do these boats have a conventional American fairly flat bottom, or do they have quite a deep V?

I am based in UK so I boat on the sea not on lakes and rivers.

Thank you in advance.

Thats a lot of power on a 22 footer.... so the performance should be pretty good. Not sure about the Talari's, but my shabah has a really deep vee, and rides excellent.

Hi DCB thank you.

Do you know what the difference between a Shabah and a Talari was?

Was one the "sporty" one and one the cruiser? Or was it an equipment thing?

Thanks

I remember reading the differences somewhere, I think the talari was the base model, and the shabah was the middle one.... but don't quote me on that. I'm sure Mikey will chime in soon, he seems to be on here every few hours. Sorry I couldnt help more.

Sorry, i guess i missed this one. Yep, the Talari was somewhat of a base model while the Shabah was the next step up in fitment but quite frankly there really wasn't much difference between them. It's kind of hard to be sure when quoting specifics based on your comment "i think its a 1998 and is 21.5 feet long" but in 1998 there was a Talari 211 cuddy that had a "V-pad" hull design, 20' 9" oal, had a 40 US gal/ 191 litre fuel capacity, weighed about 2900lbs & if you are sure about that 7.4L then you should hit the mid to high 50's. There was also a Talari 216 cuddy that was 21' oal, 60 US gal / 273 litre fuel capacity, weighed about 3200 lbs, same "V-pad" hull design which with the same motor should hit the mid 50's.

My 20' Z202 Shabah with a 5.7 does 50 on the money per GPS.

They are awesome boats BTW!

Thanks - I can post a photo if that might help the boat is actually 21 and a half feet long with a Mercruiser 7.4 with SX drive throwing an alloy prop.

What kind of liters per hour will I burn with that engine? I know you guys in the states have cheap fuel, but over here we're paying around US$10 per gallon which I think is a lot more than you are!

Here (hopefully if it works) are a couple of photos....

The auction ended and I'm in discussion with the owner now about perhaps a purchase.

Thank you guys

This ad is full of inaccuracies (1988 registration, Mariah lowered their specs in 2005 to stay competitive, wrong OAL, wrong beam, etc) but i guess maybe the vendor just didn't know any better and of course i'm assuming its a 1998 as you had indicated. You can confirm the model year by checking the last 2 digits of the Hull ID. He also advertises this boat as a "Limited Edition" of which i'm not so sure of just based on the pics. Maybe Admin or someone else with an LE can comment. The boat appears to be a 211 model & i suggest this because of the lack of portal windows in the cuddy because i believe the 216 model did come with portal windows as standard. Your comment about the SX outdrive indicates it has a Volvo outdrive? Volvo outdrives (as compared to Mercruiser) are a little rare over here but that situation may be different in the British Isles.
That 7.4L is a big engine for this boat but i suspect it doesn't work very hard so it may be that the fuel burn is (relatively) reasonable for a boat with this engine. Again, maybe someone here with a 7.4 can comment.

Re: 21.5 foot Talari - can anyone tell me more?

Hi there,

Thank you.

I didn't read the ad properly - it clearly says "Mercruiser" in the ad - so that's totally my mistake.

I've contacted a couple of brokers over here, and they say the Talari models aren't very popular - everyone wants the "Z", but if not, then certainly a Shabah.

Given our fuel cost, the engine of choice in this boat apparently would be a 4.3MPi - 220hp should be adequate given it's weight and the 7.4's just keep sending people scuttling off...

What were the identifying marks of the "Limited Edition" models so I know what to look out for when I go to view the boat?

I must admit, given the brokers comments about the engine being too big and unwanted over here, and the fact the Talari is also a less popular model, I'm starting to get cold feet - although the condition does seem (from the pics) to be excellent.

I'll go and look, but I might gib the price and see if I can do a deal!

Thanks for all your help.

It is certainly a limited edition. If you just cruise it the big engine is a great thing. If you run WOT then yeah, it's going to suck the fuel.

Thanks

Do you know what the differences were between the std and the Limited Edition?

The main difference is a solid one color hull and the buckskin color interior.

Hi all,

Can you tell me any more about the boat now I have found out the hull number??

It is - mab132471697

I'm also interested to know if this was a domestic (USA) model or built for export to the EU as I am not sure it has CE Marking (we need that here in UK, you don't over in USA).

Thank you in advance.

I can tell you that the boat is a '97 not a '98 model. Is there any chance that 1 (9th digit) is an I ? That would make more sense & would show as built in Sept 1996 & sold as a '97 model. Here's a link to the HULL ID reference chart.

As for the CE marking I'm guessing that the prior owner can give you that info since he appears to be in your neck of the woods and would have required it to register the boat.

Thanks guys,

All good info. Went to see the boat today - but SO disappointed - It was not CE Plated, was a grey import, and had a trailer that we couldn't use legally over here.

So needless to say, didn't buy it.

Thanks for all your help though.
