Where is the starter? 1995 Talari 454 Mercruiser

Our boat ran awesome this year! But all of a sudden it won't start, just a clunking noise when the key is turned. It's not the click click click of a low battery, know that sound well. Have checked the kill switch, breakers, battery cables, etc. Can't test the starter because we can't find it! Any suggestions? Thanks!

Probably in the lower port side at the rear of the engine. As a Silver Contributor, you have access to our shop manuals. Have a look at the GM454502 electrical systems manual. Here is a link to our Starter Diagnostic procedures.

Actually, on the big block, I believe the starter is on the lower starboard side of the engine toward the rear. See the attached image for it's location.

Had to change mine last year. Lovely job, the exhaust had to come off first. Give yourself plenty of time and lotsa PB blaster.
