Exhaust bellows

Took the boat in for winterization, and the marina found that the exhaust bellows in the outdirve was broke. They said it only needs replaced if you want the exhasut to go out through the prop. Other than that it wouldn't cause any issues or other damage, is this correct? I know at idle speed the exhaust will still be under water, so it will still be muffled. It really only affects it when you are at cruising speed. I just wanted to make sure water can't work it's way into the motor through this broken bellow.

Re: Exhaust bellows

Yes your boat is still usable with a torn (or missing) exhaust bellows. Your exhaust system has flappers that if still in good condition, should prevent any water getting back into the engine itself. But.....if your exhaust bellows are toast and you haven't changed the outdrive bellows in the last 5-7 years you might want to have a close look at them too. Generally they should both be replaced at the same time. Cracks in the outdrive bellows are far more serious.
