Mariahmaroo,

Sometimes people try this as a means of not replacing a defective rear shift cable. It is not a good solution.

What are the possible consequences of adjusting the shift cable as apposed to replacing it? I don't want to replace it until the end of the season because that would just mean less time on the water for me. But I also have a big trip planned to go to Lake Powell (look it up, it is beautiful) and don't want any major problems.

When I replace the shift cable I also plan to replace the Gimbal bearing, U-joints, and gears if needed, not to mention the bellows.
