What to look for?
I continue to look at a first generation Mariah z222 Do these boats have any inherent problems that I should be looking for -( Smith's comment on cracks in his hull make me nervous). Is there much or any steel used in the structure or otherwise in the boats that may be subject to rust/corrosion? Any common electrical/guage,accessory items that have common problems to watch for... You guys have all the experience - - help me know what to look for!
Thanks for any help - |
Re: What to look for?
I think with any boat you have to consider that all sellers are going to tell you what you want to hear when your asking questions.
Here are things that I look for: 1. Hour meter. If the boat is injected, have the ECM scanned for actual engine hours and compare. 2. Service Records. When was the last time any work was done, not just repairs. Those that take care of their boat will be proud to show em to ya. 3. Obvious damage/repair. Look for areas that have a different sheen or color to the gel coat. 4. Overall cleanliness. A fanatical owner keeps his/her boat spotless and is again proud to show you every square inch of it, especially those areas that are hard to get to. |

I would also add, do a close inspection of the transom and stringers. I always take a flashlight and a little hammer and tap around on everthing I can see in the bilge area, ski lockers and anywhere I can find access to the hull. Be sure to get as far down on the transom as you can. While poking around on a houseboat I was thinking of buying I actually poked my finger into the transom. I ran away from that as fast as I could! Rotten transom and stringers can be expensive to repair and not for the meek at heart.
