Do I need this part

I have a 1998 talari 179. Where the built in dash cooler drain comes through the hull there is a small white plastic piece that looks like a washer. On our last trip it must have rubbed against the dock and about half of it is now broken. My question is does this piece keep water off anything or is it just trim to hide the sides of the hole for the drain. Thanks for any help.

its a body grommet. Id say YES it would be a good idea to keep it. It keeps water out of the hull from the outside and completes the drain system from the cooker.

I would examine it closely to see if the damage allows water to access the hull itself. I suspect you can live without replacing the piece but it might be wise to put a touch of silicone on it to prevent any water entry.

I would think that either West Marine or Great Lake Skipper would have them. Most of the new boats come with polished stainless steel ones now. Probably so they dont break.

With the risk of sounding like a complete idiot and annoying you guys, is there any way to get a part number or the diameter of the drain. My boat is stored by the lake about a hour and a half north and I didnt want to drive all the way up just to measure the hole. Again sorry to be a bother I am just not good at this boat stuff yet.

I dont have your size boat and mine has two different size grommets.

They are only a few bucks a piece at most marine supply stores.... just buy a couple different sizes, then return the ones that don't fit!
