VHF radios
My antenna is cracked and ty-wrapped to the engine bay vents. It needs to be replaced.
The radio is a Sea ranger, mounted to the fuse access panel. The whole setup is kinda ugly. I'd rather just remove the antenna and radio and go with a hand held unit. I doubt I'd ever need it for more than a couple of miles, if I ever need it at all. Anyone have experience with hand held units? Good ones, bad ones? |
Re: VHF radios
If I were going to get a hand-held, it'd almost certainly be an Icom. But the lakes we're on, mostly, are big lakes (Lake St. Clair and the Great Lakes), so VHF range is important. I'd have a hand-held for use on a water gnat. Otherwise, I'd prefer a full-sized radio and antenna.

Re: VHF radios
I use the Uniden Atlantis 250 and have had desent range with it, granted not like a mounted one but still good range.

Re: VHF radios
I didn't want to drill holes to mount a fixed radio/antenna so I have a Standard Horizon HX751 and just used it the first time yesterday. Unbelivable 22 miles (as the crow flies) range. I prefer a fixed mount, but this thing works! On a side note.... sold the Z255 so the Radio + car charger + home charger are for sale $100 if interested. Rechargable/Floating/Waterproof/Glow in the dark/Distress Strobe.
