z240 Electrical Problem
 

Suggestions appreciated.

Put in a new stereo. That's when the electrical issues started. My captains choice flaps stopped working. No voltage at actuators. Checked the Carlinswitch brand rocker switch. All terminals have continuity all the time. Not sure if this should be the case. So likely it may be the switch or it is getting no voltage at all. Also, the running lights, dash lights will not work. No voltage there either. I hate diagnosing electrical issues. Also, the boat has a new battery, but cranking seems difficult. It has a clicking noise when starting like the slave solenoid is not working. Battery and alternator are new. If any of you have suggestions, I am all ears.

Well, something is wrong! The clicking is likely from lack of voltage, and there is likely some breakers or fuses for the captains call that may have tripped. Although if they don't have the voltage, they will not actuate either.

Sounds like a good place to start is the battery terminals and then the grounding system. I doubt it is the switch, check system while connected to a charger. Your battery you switched to, is it big enough?

Well, I got in the boat with my multi tester. All poles on the back of the Carlingswitch have continuity with one another whether the switch is on or off. That would mean a bad switch right? Looking at the back of the switch there are three terminals on the left side and one on the right for the captain's call. Carling said the part number for the swtich is V1D1A60B-ARC00000. CMS Quick.com out of Virginia has these switches in stock. From what I have read, the solenoids on the captain's call rarely go bad. I have the Corsa system on mine. I have not figured out why the running lights are not working yet. Let me know if you have any ideas on either of these problems.

Received the new Carlingswitch, exact match as original. The problem is not the switch. When I run test leads to the solenoids and throw the switch, it lights up, but the solenoids are getting no voltage. So I am kind of dumbfounded. I am wondering if I have a loose ground. We did just return from a 12 hour round trip trailering the boat so I am wondering if a ground came loose on the trip. It did stop working right after we got to our destination. Not seeing too many reply. Did see on another post a cheaper source for the Corsa solenoids, but I am doubting they both failed at the same time.

If there is power to the solenoids that would be next guess, but with the other issues there is a definate lack of voltage somewhere either a ground. If not I have seen starters go and draw alot of juice which could be causing the lack of voltage through out your system, not sure its the same on boats as cars but I would think very similar, just a couple of thoughts. Let us know what you find.

If it makes you feel better, which it wont, my port side wouldnt open this weekend, only the one side. So I have to get under there and see why hopefully tonight.

Problem solved. Thanks to Doug and the guys at Kerr Lake Marine in Henderson, NC. The captain's call was a wire that had come loose on our long trip to the mountains. Running lights are working again. The dimmer switch or rheostat seems to sometimes cause the dash lights not to work. I do not understand why a boat needed a dimmer switch, but oh well. I will replace if I can find a match. The starting problem seems to have been the safety cord that is on the shifter. I noticed after I took that off that the clicking when starting went away. It starts fine now. Never have liked those things. They belong on jet ski's not a boat.
