Fuel pump issues.
I don't understand, I have pulled the fuel pump and tested it and it works fine. I tried to plug it back in line in the engine and it wont work. This boat is one I m restoring so I am not familiar with it. Is there a trick that I am not aware of to get the fuel pump going? 1995 talari 190z in case you were wondering.

Hi jetscat7, I'm guessing you're working on a 4.3L motor correct? Anyway, are you getting power at the pump connector? The fuel pump is wired through an oil pressure cutoff switch, it's designed to cut the power to the pump in the event of an oil pressure failure, if the switch is bad, no power to the pump. Also, there is a fuel pump relay and its fuse that may be involved here.

How do I check to see if the oil pressure cutoff switch is working properly? Is there a way to check it? Thanks for the help. Oh yes it is a 4.3LX motor. I have checked the lines to the fuel pump and they seem all intact.

Hi jetscat7, there really isn't a way to check the oil pressure switch its self without the motor running but what you can do just to see if it's the problem is to do the following: 1) When the ignition is on, confirm that there is power to one side of the switch. if there is then go to step #2. If you do not have power here, you need to back trace the wiring. 2) As a very temporary test, wire around the oil pressure switch (effectively taking it out of the circuit) and if your motor comes alive, the switch is bad. Do not run without the switch in working condition as this is part of the motor's safety system to help minimize motor damage should you lose oil pressure. WetWilly |
Oil presssure switch was bad.
I wired around the oil pressure switch and the fuel pump got power. That solves that problem thank you. Now the engine is running a bit rough and it acts like there is a vacuum leak. I don't think there is though. I still have to replace the distributor and wires and points. Maybe that will do it. Also if anyone is looking for a good cheap way to get rid of rust just use one part vinegar and one equal part water. I soaked my thermostat housing in that for a couple of days and it looked like new. Just sprayed some black rustoleum on it and I saved 350.00. Just make sure you use equal parts. It is safe for the environment also.
Also I am not getting a reading on my volt meter. I guess i will trace it from the alternator back. Do those just go bad ever. Is there a trick to testing the gauge itself? All the input has been very helpful. The club is the only reason I have had any success without spending tons of money at mechanics trying to diagnose problems.:wink_thumbup: |
