Trim Tab problem

Hey guys,

I have a 92 Z240 with Insta-Trim /Boat leveler Co tabs on it. I just bought the boat last fall and am going through it right now. At first the tabs would barely move, so I checked the reservior and is was very low. Now they both go down, but will not come back up. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Trim Tab problem

Are they power down only and thus rely on the pressure of the water while underway to retract?

I do not believe so. One of the tabs I was able to cycle up and down one time, then it would not come back up.

I am almost sure that they have spring loaded cylinders because trim tab hydralic pumps only have presure in one direction. it does have 2 solinoids one for up and one for down do a test to see if they cleck when you operate the switch. sounds like a solinoid or switch problem to me.

Hi lowerthanu, gbaker is correct, the trim rams have a spring inside to bring the tab back to the "up" position. I know because I have the same tabs on our Z240.

I contacted Insta-Trim Boat Leveling Company and ordered an new seal kit the year we bought our Mariah because one of the rams was leaking. It's possible that the spring is weak or broken or the piston seal is swollen and causing too much friction. Don't forget to check the Trim Tab for any binding as well.

Here is a picture of the ram showing the spring and piston assembly. To make opening the ram easier, disconnect it from the Trim Plate and then you can unscrew the bottom cap to pull out the spring and piston.
