Borken Speedo
I have a 1996 Shab. After using the boat yesterday and noticing that the speedometer wasn't working, I checked the cable out when I took it out of the water. The "hollow" tube that connects tot he device that goes into the water was disconnected. There appers to be a fitting missing so I cannot re-connect. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix? thanks.

Re: Borken Speedo
By the 'device in the water' do you mean the outdrive or the sender which is attached to the boat?

Re: Borken Speedo
The plastic sender unit. The "tube" seems to have disconnected from the top of it. thanks for your help

Re: Borken Speedo
Hi cometb,
Take a look at this thread (click here), in post #12, there are several pictures of a Bravo outdrive's speedometer tube routing (the Alpha Gen II is similar), are you talking about the little plastic piece circled in green in the second picture? WetWilly |
Re: Borken Speedo
Yes but it goes to a separately mounted plastic device that has a "rod" that goes into the water (as opposed to the outdrive). thanks for the help

Re: Borken Speedo
Since your speedometer uses a 'sender' (called a speedometer pitot') the problem is probably a broken piece on it for attaching the tube. The fix appears to be purchasing a new Speedomer Pitot. The installation should be simple.

Re: Borken Speedo
Thanks! Where is the best place to purchase such an item?

Re: Borken Speedo
Hi cometb,
So it turns out you have an external pick-up. cool, any boating parts store local or on-line should carry one. They're also commonly referred to as a "Speedometer Pick Up" and you should be able to pick one up for around $10 to $15. You can try eBay, here's one really inexpensive: Click here. Wholesale Marine.com: Click here. Boaters World.com: Click here. West Marine.com: Click here. Good luck, WetWilly |
