93 5.0 LX Thunderbolt Alpha 1 Horsepower

OK......I have been working hard all day.... Well, working hard surfing for the HP of my boat. I can't seem to find a right answer.....

My 93 MX200 Talari comes with the 5.0 LX (GM 305). Therefore, it has the 4 barrel carb (Rochester), so I think. From what I read, the 2 barrel carb came with the
"5.0 L" model, not the "LX".

Some web sites claim it has 220 hp, where others will say 230 hp. Does anyone know the horsepower of my boat???

Thanks !
Rick

Here's the site I usually go to for HP ratings... http://home.earthlink.net/~nolen1/mercwot.htm

Unfortunately, yours isn't on there. My memory of that time was 220, but that was my senior year of high school / freshman year of college, so I obviously drowned a lot of brain cells!!!

I tell you man, I cant believe it. I spent all day at work looking for the ponies on this thing and I couldn't find anything concrete. You would think it would of been something easy to figure out....Oh well ! All I know is it has sufficient power for this 20 footer. Definitely not under power...All I need now are the smart tabs.....I am installing them this weekend.

I have a 1995 5.0 LX Mercruiser with the original manual. It has 205 horse power.

WOW ! I am surprised......I had found quite a bit of info on the net and most of it said between 220 and 230.....I assume yours is a 4 Barrel carb as well, since it's the LX model? Rochester carb?

So, if the "LX" model has only 205HP, how many ponies does the "L" model have? Possibly lower than the 4.3 engine??????That would be odd!

Hi Snowater dude,

According to the Mercruiser manual (copyright 1994) that came with my 1995 Mariah, propshaft horsepower in accordance with NMMA procedure using Marine Engine Rating Code SAE is as follows:

5.0 L-190

5.0 LX-205

5.7-235

350 Mag.-250

Could it be that propshaft horsepower is rated different than engine horsepower?

I guess the book doesn't lie...I believe that shaft HP is lower than engine HP.....That might explain why some documentation will rate the engine closer to 220hp...

I remember in the 70's, OMC use to rate their outboard horsepower at the engine and Merc would rate it at the prop. The Merc would always perform better than the Evinrude/Johnson. A 50HP Evinrude for example was in fact only pushing roughly 45hp at the prop shaft.....Where the Merc throughly had 50hp at the prop...
