Possible Ignition Problems?? Help!

I need some troubleshooting advice. I have a 93 1900Z w/ Merc 4.3lx GenII Weber 4bbl. I'll try to make it short, 3 weeks ago unloaded at the lake fired it up and it ran great, tooled around abit and when I got on plane it started sputtering and acked like water in the gas. After we got it back and started looking it over the motor would start and run for about 10-15 sec. then quit. When it would we could see the carb filling up with gas and that's when it would quit. Carb rebuild kit came next, put it back together and it would not start at all. Figured electric fuel pump was bad , replaced and then tried to start- no gas to carb. After a little research un-hooked the oil pressure switch and put a jumperwire in between then tried to start, started pumping gas to carb and motor turns over but won't fire. After looking some things over and trying to start with no luck we took a jumper wire from the the 50 amp breaker on the motor to the ignition coil and it fired up and ran great, take the wire off and it quits. Try it without the jumper wire and it won't fire. I have checked all the fuses I could find none blown, not sure what else to look for. Something else to think about, this may be just a coincidence but go back to the beginning when the boat was running I took the trim gauge and the hour meter out and sent them back to Faria to get re-conditioned and this all happened after I did this. I do have another set of gauges so I put them in to see if that was the problem and the new ones don't work. Even the hour meter doesn't work so I'm wondering if maybe I shorted something out. That's it Sorry for the long story, any thought's!!

Hi jeffryb,

I'm trying to trace the power through the boat via the different diagrams so please give me a little time to get back to you.

I will say that I believe the trouble may be related to the Trim Gauge so in the mean time, could you check the back of the Trim gauge and tell me if there are 2 purple wires coming off of the "I" terminal on the back of the Trim gauge? There should also be a black (ground) and a purple (power) wire, both coming from the Tach and going to the Hour meter.

Would you also check the color of the wire going to the + terminal on the coil, is it purple too?

Thanks,
WetWilly

Hey Wetwilly, I got the info you asked for here we go----The trim gauge does have 2 purple wires tied together coming from the top post, one goes to the oil presure gauge and the other not sure. Yes, there is a black (ground) wire and a purple (power) wire going from the tach to the hour meter. And also Yes ther are 2 purple wires positive side on the ignition coil , 1 goes to the ignition amplifier and not sure where the other goes. I also got in the mail today my gauges from Faria, the hour meter worked just fine it just needed to be refurbished and it looks like new but they zeroed out the hours so now I have no hours on the boat. The trim gauge on the other hand quit working at the beginning of the year so hopefully it will work now, so let me know what you think hopefully we can get her going. Thanks for your time, very much appreciated!!
