Rotten wood under bow fiberglass floor

Our 1999 Shabah bowrider has rotten wood under the fibreglass floor in the bow. For now, we have simply reinforced the front sagging section with a large piece of stainless steel. To fix this, do we have to cut out the fibreglass floor, and replace the wood? What should we replace the wood with? More importantly, any ideas on why it would have rotted out in the first place?

Re: Rotten wood under bow fiberglass floor

I have good luck with www.therotdoctor.com based in Seattle.
They have several products that are based on a high penetrating epoxy mixture.
I have used these product for vintage boat restoration and have had great success.
It will restore soft pulpy wood to a firm and structurally sound condition. And will make it impervious to further rot.

Good luck

Re: Rotten wood under bow fiberglass floor

Quick update -- the web address for this amazing site is www.rotdoctor.com (looks like they dropped the "the"). I haven't even tried the product(s) yet, but I am looking forward to taking on the rotten floor project over the winter months. I was even more delighted to see a section on log homes (we have a log chalet, with a few logs that are deteriorating). Great find. Thanks again Brit441!
