Leaky ?

Hello All

My 95 barchetta 272 is leaking a little oil. After launching & running a few hrs, Im getting a few gallons of water in the bilge. Is that normal? Also, I'm getting some really black oil from somewhere that is floating on top of the water. My engine oil is very clear. The oil leaking into the bilge is very black. The only thing I see that is that dark is the oil in the lower unit reservior.

Any suggestions?
thanks

Re: Leaky ?

Hi karmann,

The water may be entering from a worn out bellow and if that's the case, have the gimbal bearing and drive shaft U-joint checked as well. Or water could be coming from the cooling system hoses or the front water pump if the seals gone bad.

For the oil, it could be from the outdrive...if the hose from the remote reservoir is leaking. Do you need to keep adding oil to the reservoir? Another place to check is the trim pump hoses or fittings, when was the last time you checked the trim pump oil condition and level?

Good luck,
WetWilly

Hello Willie.

I changed oil today and found the oil leak. Its where the dipstick tube enters the oil pan. It looked like there was an O ring on it. It also looked like someone had worked on it, ( story of my life). I removed the tube and put on a new O rng, It made it fit pretty snug, I removed it again and coated it with RTV silicone .
Also discoved that my bilge pump line was clogged with Bees nest.
On my next run, I'm going to check around the engine comp. for water leaks.
I just had all the stuff back there replaced, Shift cable, intake hose, gimbal bearing, bellows, exhaust shutters, ect. I'll get in the back with a flashlight and see if I can see any water leaks, I did see a stain on one of the manifolds that looks like water is seeping down it?
Thanks for the info.
