newbie seeking advice on 255 Shahbah
 

surfing around for information on this boat, I came across your site. Was hoping the hands-on owner experts could evaluate this boat for me listed on ebay (price, potential problems, what to look for, etc.). I was thinking this would be a nice boat for Lake Michigan just outside of Chicago. What do you all think? Any issues with leaving it in the water in a slip?

It's a good looking boat, however you'll probably have to put some elbow grease into restoring the black gelcoat finish. Meguiars makes a great "Fiberglass Restoration Kit" which is a 3 part polish and wax. It'll take a little time to get rid of the oxidation, but that boat will look sharp if you really take care of it. But, you'll probably need to do it at least twice a season to keep it shiny.

As for leaving it on the water, you'll definitely need to get the bottom treated with a barrier coat, and then anti-fouling paint. The barrier coat seals in the gelcoat so no water can seep in, which prevents blisters and rotting of fiberglass. Then you'll need to have an antifouling paint put on to keep marine life from growing on it. These things are expensive, but necessary if you're going to keep it in the water.

I'm sure this would be a great boat for Lake Michigan around Chicago. The 502's more than enough power for that size boat, and you'll enjoy the selectable exhaust for those times you want to make your presence known. And with a boat like that, people WILL notice you! It looks to be in good shape, and have a few updated features like the stereo and alternator and such. I would try and see about test driving it before purchasing it, or have it checked out by a marine surveyor or certified Mercruiser mechanic. Thanks Chris. I appreciate the info. If you were to take a test drive what would be your checklist? I know I would check the oil dipstick before and after to make sure there is no water in the oil. What other things would be on your checklist?
