new bildge pump problem

i have a little problem. im trying to put in a new bildge pump. when i bought the boat the bildge did not work. i replaced the fuse and the light on switch would come on, so i put water in the bilge and when float switch came up, it blew the fuse. i have put a new bildge pump in and want to hook it up without the float switch.

the new pump only has a pos+ and neg- lead.
the old orignal mayfair pump has three wires coming out and boat has three wires. anyone know how to hook this up?

i tried everything i could think of.

Re: new bildge pump problem

I just put a new bilge pump and float switch in my 97. The auto bilge pump wire on my boat is brown with a white stripe which I believe is hot at all times.. So if you want to hook yours up where it can be turned on only with the switch on the dash you would just omit the brown wire with the white stripe leaving you two wires from your boat the wire to the two on the bilge pump. Hope this helps.

i tried to wire it up using only the two wires without using the one that went to switch. does any know how i would hook it up using the float swith. everywhere ive looked it shows hooking them up in series using two wires.

Re: new bildge pump problem

If your pump only has 2 wires ( pos & Neg) then you either wire it to the leads that come from the switch, If your float has 2 wires, then you put your Pos from the pump to one of the float wires, the other float wire will go to your power source, either direct hot, or to your switch, and the other pump wire to negative.
the float is just breaking the power wire to interrupt the circuit.
good luck.

i just need to know why there is three wires coming out of the boat? and only has pos and neg on back of rocker switch? where does third wire go?

Re: new bildge pump problem

The 3rd wire goes directly to the battery or a source where there is power at all times. It is where the bilge pump float switch gets its power when the switch on the dash is not turned on. On the wiring diagram the wire is labeled auto bilge.

but what i dont get is why the float switch would have power with the switch turned on. what is drawing power?

Re: new bildge pump problem

I bet the original pump had a built in float and the third input was for a constant power that the float used.

As for the wires.. My stock wires were labeled. I had 3 wires in the bilge and they were all labeled. One was ground, one was switched , and one was constant power. At the switch, the constant for the float was tied into the power side of the switch. I took the stock 'on-off' switch out an replaced it with an 'on-off-on' switch. I added an external float and hooked the constant wire to the other side of my 'on-off-on' switch. I can now put my bilge pump into 'auto', 'off', and 'on' I liked this setup so that I could turn all power to the pump off if I needed to. I have seen floats stick and kill batteries for no reason...
