Some helps with Captain's Call operation
My first ride with selectable exhaust and trying to figure a couple things out. (Factory setup.) First off, as soon as I turn my battery bank on the switch stays lit up no matter what. Even when I flip the ignition on, toggle the switch to either position then turn the ignition back off. Basically it would kill may battery if I didn't have the battery switch. This can't be right can it?
Second is that water and exhaust seems to still come out of BOTH tips regardless of switch position. One position seems louder, but not much. What I've observed when operating the switch is that in one position both the port and starboard actuators 'pull in' (piston shortens), but when I flip the switch the other direction the starboard actuator clicks 'out' (longer) and the port actuator clicks 'out' then clicks back 'in'. I don't know what the diverters are supposed to be doing internally, but something seems fishy here. Can anyone chime in on how theirs operates? |

I don't have them, but I may be able to help...
Your switch should only light if the ignition is on and the diverters are activated (switch in "on" position). I'd question the wiring to the switch and/or contacts behind the switch. As for the actuators, I think they may be getting a bit "tired". When in quiet mode, they should be closing a flap in the exhaust which causes most (but not always ALL) of the exhuast and water to go through the Y pipe and out the hub. When switched to thru-hull, they open the flaps and allow most (again, not ALL) of the water and exhuast to flow through the tips on the transom. It sounds like your port actuator is running into some sort of restriction or the ram itself needs lubricated, causing it to open and close again. I'd try looking over Corsa's website for maintenance items you could perform. It's my belief they are getting worn or corroded - may just need lubed up or could need new actuator motors. |
Re: Some helps with Captain's Call operation
I don't have them either but I know indykoch's right. I think you should check the wiring, and your actuators seem like they're not working properly. Maybe the wiring is causing the actuators to act up? Who made your kit, was it the Mercruiser, or Corsa kit? I know the Mercruiser silent choice kit used air-operated actuators, and they were known to fail after a short time. If it's a Corsa kit, I'd call them for advice.
I have heard that once you install the kit, the boat will never be as quiet as it was, since a certain percentage of exhaust will escape through the thru-hulls, but from the way you describe it, sounds like way too much is getting out. |
Re: Some helps with Captain's Call operation
This was a Corsa Captian's call from the factory. I just tore into it and it looks like its the 4-wire solenoid, not the vacuum version. The ground was one that I just cleaned up, and I added some dielectric grease to all the connections I could find. I tried swapping two wires on the switch and now the light doesn't work at all (oops, but I guess it solves my 'light killing the battery' problem.)
From what I've read there is a 'high charge' that fires for 4-5 seconds to operate the actuator, then a smaller charge that keeps the magnet activated to hold it open. It appears that the hold open magnet isn't working. Both actuators 'Y' together at the solenoid and since the starboard side it working I'm assuming the actuator itself is bad. I'll contact Corsa to see what they say. |

Sounds like you've got it under controll stereoman405! :wink_thumbup:

Re: Some helps with Captain's Call operation
The light and the actuators are supposed to stay on all the time until you shut the switch off even with the key off. Unless the switch is already off when you turn the battery switch to the on position the actuators and the light on the switch will stay on this is not abnormal that is how mine works aswell . As for the actuator i think you are right it is bad hope this helps good luck.:)

FYI - if you decide that new actuators are needed, don't let Corsa take you to the cleaners. Theres a company called Trombetta Motion Technologies that makes a direct replacement actuator - I believe its the P613 series....Even the mounting holes line up. I believe the continous duty solenoids are about $50 each, and can be purchased at most diesel equipment shops.
