New Mariah Owner With Nav Light Issues

I've found the motherland! Hoping someone can help me out. Just purchased a 1996 Shabah 182 SE and I love it. I'm having some issues with the Navigation lights. Sometimes they work and other time do not. I've gotten so far as the wire jiggle test but no flicker. If anything thelights just go on with some manipulation or by themselves. Can it just be a faulty switch? Anyone had the same issue. Glad to part of the forum.

Welcome to the board!

It could possibly be the switch, however all the Mariahs are equipped with an "SOS" circuit on the lights. That is, if you turn the nav lights on, then switch to only the anchor light, or vice versa, the lights will enter into "SOS" mode, and flash with the morse code for SOS. Fancy in one way, annoying in another. Could you be seeing this and thinking it's a problem?

If this isn't the case, I'd try and clean the contacts on the switch if you can gain access to it. Moisture can get into strange places on boats, and reak havoc on things that aren't sealed up, like switch backs and other electrical contact points. Check the connections at both the navigation light on the bow, and the anchor light on the stern and see if they've been corroded too.

Next step is to grab the trusty electrical tester and see if you're getting a solid signal, and then we'll all try and help you get things figured out!

Will check the connections

It's not the SOS circuit but I can't wait to play after fixing the lights to actually see this work. Thanks for the advice regarding the connections. I'm definitely going to clean all the leads prior to makin any drastic conclusions.

Tha advice and info about the lighting circuitry is definitely helpful.

Seems to be working

Went yesterday and cleaned the leads as well as took the switch apart and cleaned that. We were out for 4 hrs and the lights stayed on the entire time. Thanks again for your suggestions.
