How do I remove the old tachometer?
 

I have 2000 182 Shabah with a bad tachometer that I want to send back to Faria to get fixed. But after crawling around under the dash console I can't figure out how to get the tachometer out of the dashboard. There are three bots and nuts on the back that I loosened.. but the thing does not budge from the back or the front. Do I have to remove the entire dashboard (wooden veneer covering) to get this thing out? Anyone out there replaced their factory original gages and ran into this... or am I just missing something?

There should only be two nuts (I believe 3/8") that hold a plastic housing around the back of the gauge. Remove them, and the plastic "holster" will pull off. Then pull the gauge out the front.

Have you tried turning the "4,6,8" dial on the back? Sometimes the tachometer will get corroded. Just push the dial in and turn back and forth a few times. Then make sure you put it back to the proper setting. This has cleared up numerous other posters from this site and others many times. An easy fix if it works!

DO NOT try to remove the dashboard... Trust me on that one... That will turn into a really expensive project.

Like Indykoch said there are two bolts on each side that hold the plastic mount in. They're located at 3 and 9 o'clock on the back of the gauge. I've attached a picture from when I did my dash repair that kind of shows what to look for. The quality isn't the best, but you can see the critical parts. Also, see those brownish-yellow globs up in the top? That's some very non-forgiving glue that Mariah used to hold the dash together, and it breaks fiberglass and plastic if you try and remove it. You'll end up damaging your dash, and since Mariah is out of business, there's no hope for buying a replacement. Repair is the only option. That's one of the reasons I recommend NOT trying to remove the dash...

i have just removed my tech and it was a bit tight to say the least
i have found that there are 4 brass nuts on the back which hold on the relavant terminals and a black plastic retaining cowel which must first be removed .
i found the best way to remove it was to try and twist the tech and try to losen from the dash as there was a bit of a build up of sediment in the lower recess on the front from water and small sand particles which caused it to stick
a little bit of releasing oil may help to ease it . dont try and push it out in one go as i felt the veneer starting to give a bit so refraned for pushing to hard
gentle pressure and twisting did it for me .

however once removed i could not see anything wrong .

do you know if they can be repaired or is a replacement from the new Manufacture of the Mariah suitable and the same size

however it was noted to me a while a ago when i posted a question on why the tech was not working and was advised that there is a small black arrow shaped
knob on the back of the tech which when turned back and forwards can cause the possible buildup of corrosion to break free and create the connection again
but make sure you turn it back to the cylinder configuration of your boat.

Some of the gauges had two retainers and some had three like you mentioned.

In the bow area infront of the drivers side (stbd.) windshield see if the headrest will flip up, if so this was designed to allow easy access to the dash. Then you can go through this area to easily remove the gauge, be sure to mark the wires as to their exact location for reinstallation.
I will be tracking this if you have any problems.

I have a 2001 z275 Shabah mid cabin and have no access to behind top cluster of gauges, any ideas? Thank you

In the cabin remove the buttons on the Hatch on the ceiling where the light is. That will give you access to the back of the gauges.
