Stern Light Replacement
 

I know this topic has been beat to death but my power stern light does not work. I verified I have power running to it with a test light so I want to replace it with one of these...

My problem is I have no idea how to remove the original light and install this one. I assume it's fairly straightforward so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow. That's $60 cheaper than anywhere else I've looked. You'll have get up into gunwale and spin the black plastic "cup" that clamps the original unit on the boat. There are three wires attached to the original. The new one will tell you which two you will reuse.
After you get the old one out, look it over, take it apart and let me know what kind of evil magic they use to get power to the old light !! THERES NO WIRES RUNNING TO IT!!! It's some wicked voodoo going on. Another thing I discovered is you just about got to buy their light cause the hole is huge and NO ONE makes a base big enough to cover the original hole.
Font know if I answered any of questions cause I was too busy rambling on about the witch doctor enigma of how they get the power to the light, BUT, I hope it was at least a small laugh.

Thank you, Brian! My light does appear to have wires running to it though. I'm pretty sure I was messing with the right wires because when I flipped the NAV lights on it lit my test light up. I will report back when I get this thing out though.

When you get the old one out, you'll see what I'm saying. There are zero wires running up the antenna. It's magic.

Is it the motor that raises and lowers the light the part that failed, or the light itself?

If it's the motor that failed you can remove it (the motor and worm gear attached to the shaft) from the unit and manually pull the light pole up and down - That should convert your powered light to a manual light which is what you are planning to buy anyway.

If you want to attempt to replace the failed motor search eBay for replacement power antennas and look for one with a similar design.

I wish I had the option of trying that but the wires that run inside the mast (two wires encased in a nylon shell that has gear teeth molded in) shorted in mine and got real hot to the touch.

Also keep in mind the four foot mast on your replacement may extend up to the exact height of your bimini top. Ask me how I know that. :shakehead:

Ah ha!! I didn't notice the wires in the SST pull cord !! (Old guys will know what the SST toy car was!!). I destroyed mine trying to fix the housing that holds that cord. The DID work but I'm impatient

I'm pretty sure the whole thing failed. I don't see any light illuminate at all hear nothing from the motor. I am going to mess with it tonight finally. Haven't had any time to do much lately.
