1998 252 shabah, Alt question.

this boat ran fine for the past week. (just bought it.) today I tried to start it and it will turn over great,, but no start or even attempt. something I noticed, normally when I turn the key on there is a "tone" that tone is gone. after doing some looking the big orange wire on the alt is corroded off and no longer connected. here's my question. is the Alt output directly connected to the Fuel pressure regulator? is that "tone" the warning that fuel pressure is not high enough for a start condition? It was to late in the day to get a new brass connector and new brass nut to try it today. hoping someone knows this.

additionally, one of the things I noticed was the ALT gauge on the dash was never right, maxing out at about 10 amp or nothing at all. I chalked this up to corrosion and had planned to open the dash and clean all gauges.

Are you certain the gage you are looking at is an Ammeter? It is unusual to find an Ammeter gage on a boat due to the long lengths of heavy gage wire that would be required to run from the engine bay to the gage at the helm. Or is the gage a Voltmeter? If a Voltmeter then it would be normal for it read around 10V if your alternator were not charging the system due to the broken connection at the rear of the alternator.

right, Voltmeter. any Idea on why the "tone" is gone and the engine wont start? got the new parts and will be headed over in an hour or so to see if that makes a difference.

I'm going to say you've "tripped" your deadman switch. The buzzer only sounds when the key is on and the engine is not running.

Brian:
It embarrasses me to agree with you. My first solo trip in my Mariah started with my boat idling dockside while I put the trailer away. I came back, the engine stalled and would not restart, and I didn't think to check the kill switch because my son would NEVER touch that..... Uh huh!
Check the kill switch.... It's embarrassingly funny but cheaper than replacing the entire ignition system.

I would guarantee it is the kill switch. would also check the connections for the wire leading to it. I have bumped those before while pulling out my throwable and it disconnected without my knowing. You don't hear the chirp after turning the key on, and if you have fuel injection you probably won't here it pressurize either.

Yep,,,, fixed the alt wire, stepped up to the helm and turned the key,,, cranks but wouldn't start. pushed the kill switch clip in,, turned the key, tone and started right up.... LOL awesome, and now the alt is charging at 12 amps at idle.
thanks.....

Re: 1998 252 shabah, Alt question.

Congrats on the fix and good call by Brian. Lastly you mean 12 Volts at idle. When you get above 1500 RPM the Voltmeter should read somewhere between 13V and 15V depending on the temperature.

Re: 1998 252 shabah, Alt question.

right ,, 12 volts at idle, she was running about 14 volts WOT and the stereo rocking.. Fixing that 1 wire fixed most of the electrical problems I had noticed.. now I just have to fix the speedometer and everything works. Thanks again for the help.

Have u cleared the hole for the speedo on the outdrive? Is the small, rubber hose still connected from the transom mount to the out drive?

not sure of either, I will be going to the dock tomorrow to look that all over (boats in the water till late fall. its sitting on a lift, but I have to add a tank to the lift.)

Re: 1998 252 shabah, Alt question.

You may know all this but someone else who doesn't may learn something.
On the out drive, if you were to draw an imaginary line, inline with the props shaft, there is a small hole on the front of the drive, opposite the prop and in line with the prop shaft. Take a 1'8" drill bit and BY HAND, NOT WITH A DRILL!!, hand drill the hole and make sure it is clear. The hole turns upwards and comes to a plastic fitting, yellow or blue, that a small rubber hose connects to. That hose goes up into the transom mount and eventual ends up at the speedo.
That plastic fitting is going to be very brittle if it is still there. It is a quarter turn fitting and if you decide to take it off to make sure the hole is clear, I'd go ahead and get a new one on hand so if it breaks, you have the fix.
I did this all to mine and I was shocked at how accurate it is or shocked at how inaccurate the GPS is cause they are in sync !
I've owned MANY big boats over the last 30 years and all of them had the pitot (?) tube and sucked. They eventually came out with the paddle wheel but you had to have a Garmin graph, which I didn't.
So, I've over stayed my welcome again and good luck with the speedo !

You're right, Brian. That is exactly how I fixed my inop speedo. Using the 1/8" bit by hand and all..... And the results can be seen in the photo:http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d759a7b3ed.jpg

Dude.... Is that a dead body in the bow? Looking for a place to dispose of it ? Are you with the DNC ?

ROFL..... That's my 17 year old son.... I told him that he needed to take the Florida Boating Safety course before I would let him drive the 202 again. So he was sulking in the bow.... The St John's River is mostly all Manatee Zone and/or No Wake zones... That explains the 25 MPH (Manatee Zone)... So the ride was rather slow and boring for him.
And I am a far cry from being a DNC member....

you guys are Hilarious... Thank you Brian. I did not know how to fix the speedo. hopefully now i do and can get it going. Pellevine? St. Johns River? I grew up on that river, my Dad was Navy and built up a boat to use as a shrimping trawl for a side job. he ended up making more money selling shrimp, fish and crab than what the Navy was paying him. good time's..

How ironic.
I'm an Orange Park swamp rat ! I played football against coach Leonard Skinard (?). Was he a Skinner from the milk and dairy family? And no, I didn't know any of the Van Zants but I did ride my skateboard to the funeral beside the Orange Park mall.
We lived on Drs Lake.
Man, I miss that life. The river, swamps, sea cows and gators.

Brian... You guys were up at the north end of the river. I'm down here by Lake Jesup/Lake Monroe. For those of you Florida Geography Challenged.... That's a little northeast of Orlando.
I won't complain about the river speed limits... I don't need to winterize and my boating season is ten months long. I can also take the trip upriver to Jacksonville and run down the Atlantic coast. Even thought about visiting Cuba but not sure as to how safe that would be.....
The only issue here is how big the bugs are.... I found this spider building a web by my boat and I think he was putting up a toll booth......http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e653fde009.jpg
