Can i fit a sub in rear bench facing forward?

My boat is a 1999 Sabah 202. Ive read about all the posts in regards to stereo, speakers, subs. I thought forsure I saw a post were someone had mounted subs under the main seat facing the bow, but I cant find the post again. And without ordering a pair to find out it will fit or not. Ive measured the inside of the box at just over 10in. So has anyone done this?

Yeah I saw that too. Thought they made a custom seat with duel subs. It was in June of this year I think

If I know the post your talking about, in which he built a new custom bench, the subs were rear facing. I blv comments were made about the subs firing into the engine compartment.

The thread I saw somewhere was a stock bench with subs forward. Guess maybe Ill have to search the forums once again!!

I have a Kicker marine 12" composite sub box in this area. 12" Kicker CVx12, 1000 watt kicker amp.

The sound is crystal clear @ 30 and makes most tower systems sound radio shack...
Total of 10 speakers / 4 - 6" mids, 4 - tweeters, 2 - 8" coaxials, 1 - 12" sub.

Re: Can i fit a sub in rear bench facing forward?

I realize I now went off topic, my point was that the OG poster & i have basically the same layout, so, in saying that... I talked to my audio guy and he strongly recommend me not to add speakers in the bench area due to the many elements, lack of air space and risk of puncture of the speakers in that area. Oregondunes was the guy who fabbed up a custom bench and made separate enclosures for each. Very sweet setup!!!

This is why I went with a composite box in that area, I still have plenty of space for everything else, buoys, life-jackets and the most important....... sandcastle making equipment!

Any idea where you got that sub box from? Cant come up with anything.

I do currently have 2 8" subs in that location. Of course they are blown, so perfect time to upgrade right. My thinking for putting them under the bench was because for me, the rear compartment next to the motor would be more usable than under the bench seats. And it seems as the extra heat put off from the engine wouldn't be good for subs?

I have 2 6.5 clarions mounted forward facing in the rear bench currently. We haven't had any issues or close calls with damage or puncturing them so far. I would assume that subs with a grill guard would be fine.??

I couldn't either, I could find the 10" size. They might be dealer supplied only?

I asked the same thing and he told me the Kickers are designed for extreme conditions. but as i look at it that area sees a lot of air flow when driving and when still the motor doesn't put that much heat in those areas on mine.

For my thought process, if I have issues and don't like the sound i could always move it to the bench area as discussed, but I've been very happy these past two years.

Please keep us informed on what you do and post some pictures..:wink_thumbup:

Yes it can be done. I believe the 202 is a little narrower then my Z222 but you should have at least 3 Cu. Ft. of space to work with in your bench. A typical 10" in a ported box (deeper base) uses ~ 1.5 Cu. Ft. and a sealed box (better punchy sound) typically consumes .8 - 1.25 Cu. Ft.

I have a 1999 Z222 Shabah and converted the bench seat into a speaker box. The prior owner had 2 - 12" JL Audio subs stuffed in the back hatch that was very muffled. I took them out and built 2 boxes that I slipped inside the bench that hold 2 10's instead. Not wanting to have the speakers exposed to the elements, baking sun in AZ, or feet kicking them when someone is sitting on the bench I designed the boxes to fire up towards at the bottom of the seat. The cut a couple of rectangle openings with some SS mesh for the sound to come out of and used a 3" hole saw and ran the ports thought the base of the bench. With the bench seat closed there is about 3" of clear space to the bottom of the seat. These 10's are much louder and cleaner sounding then the 2 - 12" that where stuck in the back hatch even thought they a little smaller. FYI the 10's are Rockford Fosgate Prime. The only reason I selected them is the local shop had them miss priced and I picked up the pair for$120.00.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

If you need advice or help PM me. I used to do audio competition and worked building custom boxes in AZ when I was younger. So be more that happy to share the knowledge.

Tom
