Z272 violation
I was driving my buddy's 94 272 Shabah tonight and I was pulled over by the water patrol for having my docking lights on while underway. He was referring to the clear light on the bow where you have the red green light on most other boats. I explained it was original with the boat and it's on the same circuit as the navigation lights. The officer advised to take the bulb out. Does anyone know why that light is there?

Re: Z272 violation
They are docking lights, and just as the name suggests, most people will use them when docking or loading/unloading on/off the trailer at night. They came on "Z" series Mariahs. Water patrol is correct in that it is illegal to have them on while underway. There is likely a wiring mistake somewhere because they should absolutely have a switch/circuit separate from the nav/anchor lights.

Re: Z272 violation
This is not a docking light. It's on the top deck ahead of the anchor locker.

Looks like a main sail light.

Re: Z272 violation
It looks like it could be an anchor light but I have never seen one mounted on the bow. Do you have an all-around white light mounted on a pole near the stern? In any case it should not be illuminated when underway nor should it be illuminated when the nav lights are on. As the police officer suggested, I would pull the bulb for now to avoid additional fines.

Re: Z272 violation
I totally agree and that's the plan.
I was just hoping someone could tell me why it's there in the first place. :) It has both a stern light and transom light as well. The Missouri Water Patrol officer was really good about it and no fines were issued. The boat belongs to a friend. When he first told me my docking lights were on, I told him that people running with the docking lights on was a pet peeve of mine and he said him too. Amazing the number of people that think those are headlights... |
Re: Z272 violation
i might be wrong here but that should be your red/green bow light, did you buy it this way? where is your bow light in reference to this light?

Re: Z272 violation
Running lights are on the sides since it's a large boat.
Starting to think this is an anchor light that ended up on the navigation light circuit, either from the factory or a prior owner. |
Re: Z272 violation
It could be a normal bow light and there was another cover that went over it with red/green gel or lens panels?
