z280 Compass problem
Hi,
I just bought the boat, so everthing is rather new to me. It a z280 with the Faria Compass that seems to show very random headings. When i turn it on it goes to 225 degrees as it should, but after that its all random. It might be that it just needs calibration, i will try that this weekend. But Im thinking that it might be the sensor that is broken or disturbed by a speaker or something(the boat has a custom stereo-installation). Does anyone know where i should look for the sensor on this boat? |
Re: z280 Compass problem
The sensor on my Z280 is located under the step that leads down into the cabin.

Re: z280 Compass problem
Yes, it's mounted in the midship bilge compartment under the step. I'm doubting any magnetic interference around the sensor, as there's really no place to mount speakers close to it. It may just need calibration, or worst case scenario, replacement, Faria will send a new one for $140.

Anyone have instructions on how to do a calibration?

Re: z280 Compass problem
Hi, my compass on my Z28 is stuck, I looked under the dash and there are 11-12 wires connecting to the compass. Any idea of why? I searched Farina Beede and couldn’t find this one on their site or in Google images. I decided to but a replacement with 2 wires for the backlight to replace this one. It’s a Ritchie brand and looks like it will fit

Re: z280 Compass problem
I just called Faria as my compass is stuck on one heading. I was told by Paul in their tech dept that they no longer have the parts to service their electric compass and they no longer sell them. I installed a Ritchie unit and found that it doesn’t work unless installed on flat surfaces, my Z28 is on a 90% angle. I am looking for a new electric compass or a oem sensor as the thin wires are broken on mine.
