Mercruiser 4.3 "Fogging"

I've owned my 2001 Mariah Diablo for 3 years and am doing my first winterizing myself (since the local shop is very expensive). I think I understand most of the process but I'm unclear on the "fogging" step and if its even necessary.

The engine in my boat is a 4.3 Mercruiser with fuel injection. Fogging as I understand it is something required to do for carbureted engines, although there may be something else done to fuel injected engines that is commonly referred to as fogging but isn't really fogging.

I've been reading up a lot but I'm confused as to the process and if its even required. Some people say to remove spark plugs and spray fogging spray into the block or into the throttlebody, others say I need to create some kind of mixture and run that through my engine, while others are saying you don't need to do anything on 4 stroke engines (which I'm assuming mine is).

Obviously I'll be adding fuel treatment into the fuel before letting it sit, but can someone let me know what (if anything) else I need to do for this "fogging" step? Thanks!

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 "Fogging"

Mercruiser recommends replacing the fuel filter, filling the new filter with fuel leaving a small amount of room to add 2 oz of 2 stroke oil and then reinstall. Run the engine for a few seconds until you see smoke coming out the exhaust.
I have also used a can of spray fogging oil with a straw attached to it. Remove the flame arreastor, the throttle plate has a small hole in it that I snake the straw into. Start the engine and idle while spraying the fogging oil for ~30 seconds.
In both cases you want to coat all the interior surfaces of the combustion chamber, valves etc with oil to slow down corroision/rust.

Thanks, seems simple enough.
