bravo 3 new prop shaft seals leaking

Took my talari on the water yesterday for the first time since having my prop shaft seals replaced. I noticed this morning that there is a puddle of drive unit oil under the skeg. it's leaking behind the rear prop and has about a one foot diameter puddle on the floor. I really don't think new seals should leak, especially this bad. Any ideas? This thing is turning out to be a nightmare

There is a possibility you may have got fishing string tangled in there. My dads out drive drained last season because of that...

It's a possibility. I need to pull the props off and look

Did the fishing line ruin the seals?

Yeah. I don't know how it gets into the places it did but the string was on the oil side of the seal wadded up. Basically tore seal up.

Oh no. I just had new seals put on this thing too. I've been doing a lot of searching for info on this and found a lot of instances where new seals will leak some until they are run in and seated. If I don't find any fishing line, I guess I can hope that this is the case

Re: bravo 3 new prop shaft seals leaking

Paul ,
There is no reason for the seal to leak unless one of the following happens:
The fishing line around shaft , as has already been stated
A groove in the prop shaft itself
A bent prop shaft
A bad seal
Or a bad install of the seal
What does the marine tech that did your reseal say?
Ask him to pressure/vacuum test the drive , if it doesn't hold pressure/vacuum , then it is going to get water in the drive
Water in drive = bad things happen quickly

Larry, haven't talked to the shop that replaced my seal yet, but I do remember him saying he had a heck if a time getting it on there. Kinda raised my eyebrows when I heard that. I'm gonna pull the props off later this morning. If there's no fishing line, then it could be a bad install or one of the other things you mentioned

I'll post my findings. This thing is really turning into a money pit. Found several other things wrong, too, that need attention on top of the seal leak

A boat is a money pit , and as I have heard many times , "If you work with it , or play with it , it's gonna cost ya" :(
Hang in there , once she is back in shape she'll be much easier to maintain Paul. :)

Ok- got the props off, didn't find any fishing line. Did see where it is leaking from, though. The rear seal. Lowered the motor back down and it started dripping out. The old seals didn't leak any, but since the boat sat up for quite a while, I decided it would be best. I'm thinking a bad install since it didn't leak before. Going to have a talk with the mechanic and see what they will do about it, if anything. Attachment 5377

Re: bravo 3 new prop shaft seals leaking

Took some pics and went to the boat shop where I had the seals installed ( local tracker marine mercury dealer) and talk to the service man about my problem. He was real nice and wants me to bring the whole boat in so they can check it out. He said they were backed up with tons of other boats getting repairs, but would get mine in fast since it is a problem that they worked on. Taking it down there tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully they'll do the right thing and get it fixed without charging me for it, if it ends up being an error on their part

Re: bravo 3 new prop shaft seals leaking

Well, shop called the other day and told me what they found. The brass bushing that fits behind the back prop was worn out just enough that it slid back too far and bit into the seal lip when I tightened the prop down. As soon as I fired up the motor and put it in drive, the bushing snagged the seal and ripped it loose from its retainer mount. It was spinning with the shaft, sooo it's back at the shop waiting in a new seal to come in. I took the whole boat this time instead of just the drive so they can test it. Wish I would've done that the first time. Live and learn!
