ran out of gas. 2 weeks later no idle
2000 mercruiser v6 2bbl carb
I ran her out of gas and did not replenish until 2 week later. I went to start her up and she won't idle. I get a slight loss of power at all speeds, (or maybe that is mental), but I have to keep it reved to prevent from stalling. I have taken off the carb and it looks okay. I recently changed the fuel pump and fuel filter (last month). 1. What should I look for in the carb? 2. Where can i buy a gasket set for the carb? 3. How should I clean the carb? |
Re: ran out of gas. 2 weeks later no idle
Crap stuck in float valve or jet would be my bet.
What is your serial number? Couple cans of Gumout Carb Cleaner outta do the trick:wink_thumbup: BTW: I'd change the filter again also. |
Re: ran out of gas. 2 weeks later no idle
that's my plan. I have it taken apart ready for a good cleaning .
I will be taking it apart for a good spray down. Why change the fuel filter? You think it got gunk in it... hmm. i will take a look. good point |

lol.... sorry I posted the wrong reply to the wrong thread....
I was on my phone and couldn't delete it so blanked it out :rolling_laugh: |
Re: ran out of gas. 2 weeks later no idle
that didn't work. Carb is clean and she still bogs out hard. Even when I give her a little throttle, she tries to bog...
In fact i am getting poofs of smoke. Even got a fire ball while playing with the throttle. How many turns back should the idle screw be? What else could cause such a tremendous bog out? I get strong jets of fuel. |
Re: ran out of gas. 2 weeks later no idle
have you checked the ignition timing?
have a look and see if the clamp on the dissy has come loose. Backfiring through the carb is one sign of the ignition timing being out. |
Re: ran out of gas. 2 weeks later no idle
I think it is a problem with my auto choke
It never moves and is ALWAYS open. Also, choke housing gets very hot when i run. Picture of engine OFF or running at 1500 rpm. (choke Plate ALWAYS open, even when off) Can't start or idle unless throttling http://i.imgur.com/NAfMGeH.jpg SOO. I unplugged the auto choke and over adjusted so it will almost close when off. I was able to idle around 900rpm. When i turn off motor; the choke plate closes... This is a pic of me running at 900ish rpm. The idle screw is not touching the idle cam even though im at neutral. (i can push on the throttle cable to reduce rpm, but that is not the home.) http://i.imgur.com/rhDwXCK.jpg I think i just need to replace my auto choke and find the right idle mix. Here is where i blindly set it: http://i.imgur.com/dtjxlex.jpg Here is is out of the carb: http://i.imgur.com/GVDDgU0.jpg Crappy pic just showing my auto choke when motor is off.
