Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
I tried checking fuses and ground and got a new battery. Still nada. I tried bypassing the starter. Still only getting a click. Trim switches do nothing.

start with the simple stuff first, kill cord/battery isolator. then work from there

Have a look thru our guide to Troubleshooting your Starting system....

Re: Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
done all of this.
I hear a click. Sometimes the starter moves a small amount. If I place a jumper to the braided "ground" wire going to the starter, the engine turns a tiny bit on every key turn; But the wire gets very hot. When I place a test light onto the braided ground wire; the light turns on. When i turn key. I hear a click and the light goes out until i return key to off position. Every attempt to jump the starter solenoid fails. I don't even hear a click. just a weird winding noise... |
Re: Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
Need to verify you have 12v at the starter main cable , could be just a bad cable or connection , but it sounds as though the starter drive is giving you problems. It's drawing a butt load of current it sounds like.
I'd just pull it and have it tested. Then you would be able to move to another area if it is OK. JMO |

Thanks for the response!
How do you pull the starter? Is it two long bolts in the back? 4.3 mercruiser carb |
Re: Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
Yes sir ,
Kinda a pain to get at sometimes , but very doable. Pull the mounting bolts and then undo the wiring. Pretty straight forward. See attachment #2 in mikeys post for the wiring at the starter. |
Re: Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
you did try turning the motor over by hand ?to make sure the motor is not seized up
|
Re: Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
how do you turn an inboard over by hand?
I am pretty sure it's not seized. i was runner her fine last weekend. Starter has been showing signs for a few weeks. I just thought it was the battery. |

Re: Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
Now i need to figure out why my trim switch does nothing
|
I would always check your grounds first. Make sure they are all shiny and well contacted. Then check your switch. Are you getting voltage out of the switch when activated? If not, take the switch apart and clean the contacts if it can be taken apart. Not sure of your setup, but here is what I went thru.
Check grounds Clean switch contacts Check trim solenoids. They should be next to your trim reservoir. Make sure all contacts and wire terminals are cleaned and shiny. If you are getting voltage out of the switch, then try "jumping" your solenoids. I have 3 of them. Not sure how many you will have. If voltage gets to the solenoid and nothing happens when you jump it, then the solenoid is bad. If solenoid is working, then check for a reset switch on the trim motor. That's all I can think of right now.... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |
Poor memory is telling me power for the trim pump comes off the starter solenoid? Battery side so hot all the time?

Did you look at the "How To..." for the trim system? Its pretty easy to follow.

Re: Suddenly my Boat won't start & trim doesn't work
If anyone reads this:
The problem was my starter. New starter fixed issue. I believe my old starter was seized up. It was drawing a lot of power but had no go. Either that or the solenoid wasn't delivering full power... W/e fixed. My trim was a bad ground. Just cleaned some terminals and boom! |
Glad you got her fixed!
