Kill switch question

I have a 1995 Mariah 202 and when i put it in the foward gear the engine dies. If I put it in reverse it does not die. Just had some work on the lower unit but I don't think that is the problem. Sometimes it will go into foward and run great then after being in neutral for a few minutes and then put back to foward the engine dies. The kill switch operate correctly if I have the engine running and move the switch to the off position the engine will turn off. Any one have a idea what could be wrong?

Re: Kill switch question

Sounds like an electrical issue. Possibly in the shift interrupt circuit. This circuit works off some small switches on top of you motor they are connected to the shift linkage and the distributor. When the shifter is moved, this circuit temporarily cuts power to the ignition circuit so the gears in the lower unit will not get damaged when they engage. What engine do you have? The switches have a roller tip that rides on a cam beside the carb. There are usually two, one for forward, one for reverse. The forward one could be going bad, loose, or out of adjustment. Be sure to check all the connections and wiring. Look in the maintenance section under manuals for wiring diagrams and adjustments. If you find this to be the problem, DO NOT simply disconnect the switch, this will damage you lower unit when you shift gears.
Hope this help, and Happy Boating
