engine just revs when in gear
My 1999 Shabbah Mercruiser 4.3 V-6, 190 HP went over some low areasa and now just revs when I throttle up in both forward and reverse. There is just enough prop thrust at idle to get up to 2-3MPH. Nothing else asppears to be wrong .
Any ideas? Spun prop maybe? |
Re: engine just revs when in gear
That would be my guess.

Re: engine just revs when in gear
either spun prop hub or bad engine coupler... I hope for your sake it's the spun prop hub.

Re: engine just revs when in gear
Same thing happened to me. For me it's the coupler. But the only problem besides the $500 part is how do you pull the 7.4 out of a 252z Mariah?

Re: engine just revs when in gear
Im betting its the coupler. Not a fun job. I did one in a Glastron with a 454/bravo 1. All of the rear interior had to be taken out. Good news is that the motor doesnt have to be completely removed. Most things can be left intact, you just have to pull motor mounts loose and remove bolts the bolts on the rear of the motor to seperate it from the transom. The motor has to be supported obviously and moved forward about six inches. Just enough room to get your hands in there and remove the bolts that hold the coupler to the flywheel and remove/replace. crappy job but better than paying the $2500 i was quoted just for labor.

Re: engine just revs when in gear
I bet it is a spun prop. Put into gear (not running and out of the water) and turn your prop. if the prop spins free and the drive nut does not turn its the prop.

Re: engine just revs when in gear
It will be interesting to hear if zzzino1 ever got around to fixing the problem and what the results were.
btw...my bet is with the coupler. Even a spun prop can still push the boat forward a bit unless the hub is completely destroyed. |
